Duke’s David Cutcliffe knows who he wants as offensive line coach, source says
Duke coach David Cutcliffe has zeroed in on a new offensive line coach.
Greg Frey, who has coached linemen at Florida State, Michigan and Indiana during his career, is in the process of finalizing a deal to join the Blue Devils, according to a Duke source with direct knowledge of the situation.
The Blue Devils are in need of a new offensive line coach because Jim Bridge resigned last week after coaching that group the last two seasons. Bridge was hired last Friday to coach the offensive line at Memphis.
Frey played on Florida State’s 1993 national championship team before embarking on a long coaching career.
He coached at South Florida from 1996-2006, starting as a graduate assistant before becoming full time and working with defensive and offensive lines.
Since then, he’s been an offensive line coach at West Virginia (2007), Michigan (2008-10 and 2017), Indiana (2011-16) and Florida State (2018).
Willie Taggart, Florida State’s coach at the time, fired Frey in February 2019 and Frey spent this past season at on Dan Mullen’s staff at Florida as a quality control coach.
While at Indiana, Frey was the run game coordinator, co-offensive coordinator and assistant head coach in addition to handling the offensive line. He was on the Hoosiers’ staff at the 2015 Pinstripe Bowl when Duke beat Indiana 44-41 in overtime.
Frey also had run game coordinator duties at Michigan in 2017 and Florida State in 2018.
