Pitchers rarely talk about having a perfect day on the mound, but Duke’s Bryce Jarvis could say that Friday.

Jarvis, a junior right-hander from Franklin, Tenn., pitched the first perfect game — 27 batters up, 27 down — in the Blue Devils’ program history in an 8-0 victory over Cornell at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham.

Jarvis had a career-high 15 strikeouts in leveling his record this season at 1-1 for the No. 16 Blue Devils. Rounding out his perfect game were 10 groundball outs and two flyouts.

Jarvis needed 94 pitches to record the 27 outs and had a three-ball count just once.

It was the 31st perfect game in NCAA Division I history and the first since East Carolina’s Jake Kuchmaner was perfect against Maryland in March 2019. It was the seventh no-hitter in Duke baseball history.

“My mindset was to go out there and control what I can control,” Jarvis told goduke.com, the Duke athletic web site. “Once the ball leaves my hand there’s nothing I can do about it. I have to trust that my defense is going to make a play if they put it in play.”

Rudy Maxwell had two hits, scored twice and drove in three runs for the Blue Devils (4-1).
