Duke basketball assistant coach Amile Jefferson faces a reckless driving charge after an N.C. Highway Patrol officer recorded him driving 89 mph in a work zone on the Durham Freeway.

Durham County court records show the 29-year-old Jefferson, who played on Duke’s 2015 NCAA championship team, was stopped at 10 a.m. April 14 driving on N.C. 147 near the Ellis Road interchange south of downtown.

At the time, the posted speed limit was 55 mph as that stretch of road was under construction as part of the since-completed East End Connector freeway project.

He was cited with three misdemeanor charges, including speeding in a work zone more than 80 mph, reckless driving and wanton disregard for the rights and safety of others and failing to wear a seat belt.

Jefferson is due in court on Aug. 26 in Durham to face the charges, court records showed.

Reached Tuesday, Duke basketball spokesman Mike DeGeorge declined to comment about the situation.

Jefferson played at Duke from 2012-17 and, after his professional basketball career, returned to join Duke’s staff last year as director of player development.

He was promoted to an assistant coach in April on head coach Jon Scheyer’s staff.
