How to watch or stream the Duke vs Wake Forest ACC college basketball game on Tuesday
While No. 14 Duke is expected to have injured guard Jeremy Roach back for Tuesday night’s ACC game at Wake Forest, two other players will not be available due to a non-COVID illness.
The school announced Tuesday that freshmen Dereck Lively and Dariq Whitehead will not be with the team for the 6:30 p.m. game at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem.
On Monday during a Zoom session with reporters, while not indicating any players would be unavailable, Duke coach Jon Scheyer said a sickness had been going through the team the past week.
“I‘m sure that’s what every team goes through,” Scheyer said. “it seems like everybody right now has something going on.”
But he also was encouraged with the team’s overall health because Roach, a junior guard, would be available to play against Wake Forest after he missed Duke’s 82-55 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 10 with a toe injury.
“Jeremy is in good shape,” Scheyer said on Monday. “He’ll be ready to go.”
Lively and Whitehead both missed time in preseason with different injuries. A 7-1 center, Lively missed one game due to a strained calf he suffered in October. Whitehead fractured his right foot in August and, after having surgery, missed Duke’s first three games before making his debut.
Both players started against Maryland-Eastern Shore as Duke used an all-freshmen starting lineup for the first time in program history. Whitehead scored 15 points while playing 25 minutes in that win, while Lively contributed eight points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots while playing 21 minutes.
Duke (10-2, 1-0 ACC) has had 10 days off from games since that win. The Blue Devils opened the season playing 12 games over the first 33 days. The 10-day break for final exams, which concludes with Tuesday’s game at Wake Forest, leads into another 10-day break before the Blue Devils play Florida State at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Dec. 31 at 1 p.m.
Without Lively and Whitehead, graduate student Ryan Young is likely to return to the starting lineup. The 6-10 Young started Duke’s first three games this season while Lively was recovering from his calf muscle injury. Young has played in all 12 games for the Blue Devils, averaging 7.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
Roach, the team’s lone captain and only returning starter from last season’s Final Four team, had been slowed by a toe injury he initially suffered Nov. 27 against Purdue. He played through the pain for the next three games, all Duke wins, before spending the Maryland-Eastern Shore game on the bench in street clothes to maximize time off.
Freshmen Tyrese Proctor, Mark Mitchell and Kyle Filipowski are the only Duke players who have started all 12 games for the Blue Devils this season. Roach and Young joined them to form the starting five three times previously.
Graduate student forward Jacob Grandison and sophomore Jaylen Blakes have played the most in reserve roles, with each averaging 18 minutes per game.
Including Lively and Whitehead, Duke has nine players averaging 16 minutes per game or more.
Scheyer said the team has grown much needed depth while Lively, Whitehead and Roach dealt with their injuries. Now that depth will be needed with the team short-handed at Wake Forest due to illness
“Sometimes when you have injuries,” Scheyer said, “other guys can emerge, other guys can grow confidence at a different level. I think that’s happened for our group. Now we need to just continue to find something new from here. But I did feel, when we finally got our full roster intact, that it was going to be versatile, well balanced and able for different guys to step up. But I didn’t know it would lead to the kind of depth that we’ve had.”
