After a season-and-a-half as an understudy, Henry Belin is highly likely to be in a spotlight position for Duke football this Saturday night.

The redshirt freshman quarterback will be in charge of running the No. 17 Blue Devils’ offense against N.C. State if, as expected, Riley Leonard is unable to play due to his right ankle injury.

Duke’s starter in each of the last 18 games over the last two seasons, Leonard was injured at the end of Duke’s most recent game, a 21-14 loss to Notre Dame on Sept. 30. Duke coach Mike Elko said Leonard is making strong progress and he will return this season.

At the same time, Belin is prepared to start when Duke (4-1, 1-0 ACC) plays the Wolfpack (4-2, 1-1) at Wallace Wade Stadium.

“Henry is more than ready,” Duke safety Brandon Johnson said. “We saw him early in the season. He’s performed well. He’s confident and I think he’s more than ready for this moment.”

Belin has played in two games this season, completing all eight passes he’s thrown. At the same time, his lack of experience could be a concern against an NC State defense that leads the ACC with 21 sacks this season.

Leonard only threw one interception over Duke’s first five games this season. N.C. State has picked off seven passes. Only Louisville (eight) has more interceptions this season among ACC teams.

So, Belin’s been making sure he’s prepared.

“He’s working hard every day,” Duke wide receiver Sahmir Hagans said. “Henry’s one of the hardest workers on our team.”
