Two career starts, two thrilling fourth-quarter performances for Duke quarterback Grayson Loftis.

A freshman pushed into duty instead of a redshirt season due to injuries to Riley Leonard and Henry Belin IV, Loftis led Duke to a fourth-quarter comeback win over Wake Forest, and brought Duke back late against North Carolina. The Tar Heels eventually won, 47-45, in double overtime, but that doesn’t take away from Loftis’ fine play.

Loftis completed only four passes over the first three quarters, but he completed 9-of-16 passes for 125 yards and one touchdown in the fourth quarter, while going 3-for-3 for 16 yards and one score in overtime.

“I thought Grayson Loftis played one heck of a game,” Duke coach Mike Elko said Monday. “Certainly, looking at him in the fourth quarter, I thought that’s the best our offense executed, particularly in the passing game, in a while, and that was great to see as we needed it.”

With Leonard still out with a toe injury and Belin’s upper body injury still limiting his availability, Loftis will be quarterbacking Duke against Virginia on Saturday.

He’s come a long way and continues to show the coaching staff he has a grasp on how to win a game.

“I think each time he goes out there he’s now going into a situation that he’s been in,” Elko said. “The first game against Wake, he gets his first start. The game against North Carolina, it’s his first start on the road. So now you’ve checked a lot of boxes and I think the nerves aren’t going to be as bad. You’re not worried as much about having to completely settle him down in a new environment.”
