Duke

How to watch Duke play NC State football as Triangle ACC rivals clash in Raleigh

As impressively as Duke football has played at home the last three seasons, losing just three games, the Blue Devils haven’t been as successful away from Wallace Wade Stadium.

That’s particularly true in ACC play, with the Blue Devils having lost seven consecutive league road games as they prepare for the short trip to face N.C. State at Carter-Finley Stadium Saturday.

Duke’s most recent ACC road win came in November 2022 at Boston College. This season’s Blue Devils (6-3, 2-3 ACC), under first-year head coach Manny Diaz, saw second-half leads disappear to lose 24-14 at Georgia Tech on Oct. 5 and 53-31 at Miami last Saturday.

“What they both have in common is we had second-half leads,” Diaz said, “and you’ve got to anticipate that a team at home is going to make a big push. Everyone’s got pride about not getting beat in their own stadium.”

Duke was on the positive side of that in September, rallying from a 20-0 deficit to beat North Carolina, 21-20, at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Having worked as an NC State assistant for former coach Chuck Amato two decades ago, Diaz knows the tough environment that awaits his team in Raleigh. The Wolfpack (5-4, 2-3 ACC) dropped consecutive ACC home games to Wake Forest and Syracuse last month. But N.C. State looked impressive while beating Stanford, 59-28, last Saturday at home.

So, pointing out what his team failed to do at Georgia Tech and Miami, Diaz said Duke needs to be able to “counter the counter” when the home team makes its second-half push.

“It’s something you just have to expect,” Diaz said. “You have to get into that situation, learn what maybe betrayed us in terms of our lack of execution in those situations, and then work to improve on that. We’ve got a great environment to go into Saturday. We’re actually excited about the chance to prove ourselves on the road again.”
