With the first nine-win regular season just a win away, another major accomplishment would come if Duke can beat Wake Forest when they play on Saturday in Winston-Salem.

Having already posted wins over in-state league rivals North Carolina and N.C. State this season, the Blue Devils can complete a sweep of the state’s Big Four ACC teams if they can knock off the Demon Deacons.

Last season, the first after the ACC scrapped divisions and put the three other Big Four teams on Duke’s schedule, the Blue Devils went 2-1, losing only to UNC. That changed this season with a 21-20 comeback win over the Tar Heels on Sept. 28. Duke won 29-19 at N.C. State on Nov. 9.

Now the Blue Devils (8-3, 4-3 ACC) head to face Wake Forest (4-7, 2-5 ACC), which has the worst record among the state’s four league teams and is the only one of the four assured of not going to a bowl game.

“The state championship is a goal of ours,” Duke coach Manny Diaz said. “Without divisions in the league, and the way the schedule works, we will play those three teams every year. We can’t pretend to go make a run at the ACC without making a run at our state. And so that’s a big deal to us. We are the only team that has a chance to win the state this year. Our guys are aware of that.”
