NC State football player faces multiple charges related to drinking, fleeing police
A 19-year-old N.C. State football player from Orange County faces multiple charges related to consuming alcohol, running into traffic fleeing police, and attempting to hide under a parked car, according to arrest warrants.
Payton Tanner Wilson, of Hillsborough, was arrested Saturday morning on charges of consuming alcohol by a 19- or 20-year-old, possession of a fraudulent ID, injury to personal property, impeding traffic and two counts of resisting an officer.
All of the charges are misdemeanors, except for the impeding traffic, which is a traffic offense.
The warrants were issued Saturday and served around 4:35 a.m. Wilson was arrested at 400 N. West Street, according to the Wake County to Wake County jail information.
Wilson, an N.C. State redshirt freshman linebacker, was released from the Wake County jail around 6:30 a.m. on $3,375 bail, according to jail officials and documents.
Wilson, after missing the 2018 season with a knee injury, led the Wolfpack in tackles (69) and was one of the few bright spots in a difficult 2019 season.
He was a football and wrestling standout at Orange High School and was one of the highest-rated recruits to sign with N.C. State under coach Dave Doeren.
The arrest warrants state on Saturday morning Wilson ran from an officer into traffic, was struck by a car and then continued to flee before hiding under a parked car. Wilson also possessed his brother’s ID for the purpose of purchasing alcohol, the warrant states.
“We are aware of the situation, and we will gather more information,” said Annabelle Myers, an assistant athletic director for N.C. State. Myers said she doesn’t believe Wilson was hurt in the incidents.
