Second round of COVID-19 tests administered for NC State athletics, two more positive

N.C. State has administered a second round of COVID-19 testing and released the results Friday afternoon.

According to Fred Demarest, senior AD for communications, 280 tests were given to student-athletes, coaches and staff members. Out of the 280 test, two came back positive.

Overall, N.C. State has done 595 tests with seven positive results. The second round of testing did include members of the program who had been tested before, Demarest confirmed. Those who tested positive have followed the university protocols for isolation.

“The student-athletes, coaches and staff have been incredibly responsible and taken this extremely seriously,” Demarest wrote in a message to the N&O Friday afternoon.

On June 2, N.C. State Athletic Director Boo Corrigan laid out a plan for student-athletes to return to campus. Members of the football team and the men’s and women’s basketball teams were allowed to participate in voluntary, on-campus workouts.

Before they started, the athletes had a physical examination and COVID-19 test. Once cleared, they were allowed to participate in workouts in small groups. Phase 2 started on June 20, with returning and incoming football players allowed into student housing.

Students at N.C. State started moving into campus dorms on Friday and will continue over the next 10 days. Classes start on Aug. 10.
