What’s the latest on NC State’s NCAA infractions case involving Dennis Smith Jr.?
No news has turned out to be good news for N.C. State’s basketball program.
The university, which received a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA in July 2019 and was charged with two Level I violations involving former guard Dennis Smith Jr., doesn’t have any new updates from the NCAA on its infractions case, Fred Demarest, the Wolfpack’s senior athletic director for communications, told The News & Observer.
The school responded to its notice from the NCAA in December.
In May a request for referral of the NCAA infractions case involving N.C. State to the Independent Accountability Resolution Process was granted by the Infractions Referral Committee.
No further details about the matter and alleged violation involving Smith will be released until the panel releases its final decision, the NCAA said.
After the NCAA again responded to N.C. State in February, it was believed the case could go before the NCAA Committee on Infractions this year.
The case stems from the testimony of former Adidas consultant, T.J. Gassnola, who said in federal court that a $40,000 payment was made to Smith’s family during his recruiting process.
Gassnola testified that in October 2015, he made the payment to former N.C. State assistant coach Orlando Early, who was supposed to deliver the money to Shawn Farmer, a trainer to Smith and the middle man between the family and Gassnola.
Smith played under former coach Mark Gottfried and Early from 2016-17 before leaving the Wolfpack after one season for the NBA draft. He was picked ninth in the 2017 draft by the Dallas Mavericks. He was traded to the New York Knicks in January 2019.
