NC State blows 10-point lead in 4th quarter to lose to D’Eriq King and No. 11 Miami

North Carolina State blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter and watched a chance to upset No. 11 Miami go through its hands, losing 44-41.

The Hurricanes (6-1, 5-1) scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and preserved the victory when N.C. State QB Bailey Hockman threw an interception while attempting to make a comeback on the Wolfpack’s final drive.

Miami’s D’Eriq King threw for 430 yards and five touchdowns. He rushed for another 105.

Hockman passed for 248 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass in the first quarter from Thayer Thomas.

D’Eriq King to Michael Harley: Miami 44, NC State 41

D’Eriq King threw a 54-yard strike to Michael Harley and Miami came back from 10 down to take a 44-41 lead with 2:43 remaining.

Jose Borregales field goal: NC State 41, Miami 37

The N.C. State defense turned Miami away at the one, and the Canes were called for a false start on fourth and one. That led to a 22-yard field goal from Jose Borregales with 6:12 remaining.

Jose Borregales answered the field goal by Christopher Dunn, with a kick of his own, this time from 38 to make it a seven-point game.

Christopher Dunn FG: NC State 41, Miami 31

Christopher Dunn tied his career-long with a 53-yard field goal to start the fourth quarter for N.C. State.

End of third quarter: NC State 38, Miami 31

N.C. State scored 14 points in the third quarter, both from Bam Knight, and led No. 11 Miami by seven heading into the fourth quarter. Knight had a one-yard touchdown run and a 100-yard kick off return for N.C. State.

Zonovan “Bam” Knight took a kickoff 100 yards to the house for a touchdown, putting the Wolfpack back in front after Miami took a brief lead midway through the third.

D’Eriq King TD: Miami 31, NC State 31

D’Eriq King threw his fourth TD pass of the night, giving him 282 yards passing as Miami tied the game with N.C. State at 31 all.

Bam Knight TD: NC State 30, Miami 24

N.C. State’s Zonovan “Bam” Knight only needed one shoe to score a 1-yard TD in the third quarter. The Wolfpack covered 75 yards in nine plays to extend its lead over the Hurricanes. Knight has 44 yards on 11 carries. The big play of the drive was a 34-yard pass from Bailey Hockman to Emeka Emezie on third and six.

Hockman to Angeline TD: NC State 24, Miami 21

Bailey Hockman threw a bullet to tight end Cary Angeline in the back of the endzone as N.C. State jumped back in front of Miami, 24-21, with 2:49 remaining in the first half.

Christopher Dunn FG: Miami 21, NC State 24

Christopher Dunn kicked a 42-yard field goal for N.C. State’s first score of the second quarter. The drive stalled when Bailey Hockman was sacked for a loss of six on third and six.

D’Eriq King TD: Miami 21, NC State 14

D’Eriq King tossed his third touchdown pass, this time a 20-yard throw to Michael Harley as Miami took its first lead, 21-14, of the day. King has passed for 121 yards.

End of first quarter: NC State 14, Miami 14

Bailey Hockman and D’Eriq King were each responsible for two touchdowns in the opening quarter between N.C. State and Miami. Hockman caught a touchdown pass from Thayer Thomas, then threw one to Devin Carter in the opening quarter. Hockman completed 5 of 8 passes for 100 yards in the first quarter. King threw two touchdowns and passed for 94 yards.

D’Eriq King TD: NC State 14, Miami 14

D’Eriq King threw his second touchdown of the day, hitting Dee Wiggins for a 39-yard score. King has 81 yards passing and two touchdowns.

Devin Carter TD: NC State 14, Miami 7

Bailey Hockman threw a touchdown this time, hitting wide receiver Devin Carter for an 11-yard strike with 6:31 remaining in the first quarter. Hockman completed three passes for 58 yards on the scoring drive.

Miami answers: NC State 7, Miami 7

The Hurricanes took an early body blow from the Wolfpack, but answered with a 75-yard drive. D’Eriq King picked up 44 yards on 4th and 1, then ended the drive with a two-yard touchdown pass to Will Mallory.

Bailey Hockman TD: NC State 7, Miami 0

Wolfpack wide receiver Thayer Thomas took a handoff on the jet sweep then threw the third touchdown pass of his career when he hit quarterback Bailey Hockman for a 31-yard pass on a trick play. The Wolfpack covered 96 yards in just six plays. There’s 12:44 remaining in the first quarter.

A big return for the Wolfpack?

N.C. State junior safety Tanner Ingle was in uniform for pregame warm ups for the Wolfpack. Ingle missed the UNC game after suffering a hamstring injury versus Duke.
