Former NC State baseball star Tommy White wins national award after record-setting season

Former N.C. State infielder Tommy White, whose 27 homers broke an NCAA freshman home run record that stood for 32 years, was named the 2022 National College Baseball Writers Association National Freshman Hitter of the Year on Tuesday.

White, a native of St. Petersburg, Florida had a spectacular rookie campaign for the Wolfpack. A first-team all-ACC selection, he broke N.C. State’s single-season mark for home runs. He was one of just two freshmen named to the all-ACC first team.

After the Wolfpack’s season ended in the ACC tournament, White made headlines days later when he entered the transfer portal. The 2022 ACC Freshman of the Year, he batted .362 with 12 doubles and 74 RBI.

In the ACC tournament against Miami, White hit three home runs, tying the ACC tournament record for home runs in a game. White had six games this season where he hit two or more home runs. On Monday, he was named a NCBWA Freshman All-American first team designated hitter.

White and his bat burst onto the scene the opening weekend of his college career, when he hit three home runs in his debut. Quickly earning the nickname ‘Tommy Tanks’ from N.C. State fans, he finished that weekend with five home runs against Evansville.

Tennessee right-hander Chas Burns was named the Freshman Pitcher of the Year.
