Live updates from the game
N.C. State football coach Dave Doeren likes to say there’s nothing like a “night game under the lights at the Carter.” And the No. 16 Wolfpack has one Saturday against Texas Tech of the Big 12 Conference.
Both Power Five teams are 2-0 after similar starts to the season. The Pack edged East Carolina and blew out Charleston Southern and the Red Raiders blew out Murray State and then edged Houston in double overtime.
The News & Observer’s Chip Alexander and Luke DeCock are at Carter-Finley Stadium and will have updates from all the action.
Check back for live updates throughout the game, which starts at 7 p.m.
Smith TD run: NC State 27, Texas Tech 14
Donovan Smith’s 3-yard scoring run with 10:46 left in the fourth quarter has made it a 27-14 game. The Red Raiders went 75 yards in 12 plays for the score, and many Wolfpack fans were upset that a late-hit penalty was called on NCSU’s Tanner Ingle late in the drive.
Sumo-Karngbaye TD: NC State 27, Texas Tech 7
After the Red Raiders failed on a fourth-down play, the Pack used the halfback pass to take a 20-point lead. Leary threw to Thayer Thomas behind the line and Thomas found Sumo-Karngbaye open down the right side for a 38-yard score, the running back’s second TD of the game.
Sumo-Karngbaye nearly had a third TD after a third-quarter completion from Devin Leary, but was stripped of the ball just before the goal line, the ball going out of the end zone for a touchback.
Injury update: Pack’s Jordan Houston out
NCSU running back Jordan Houston was injured with 1:39 left in the third quarter when hit in the helmet by a defender’s knee at the end of a carry.
Injury update: Pack’s Baker-Williams injured, out
Wolfpack defensive back Tyler Baker-Willams has been ruled out for the second half. Baker-Williams was injured in the opening half.
Halftime: NC State 20, Texas Tech 7
Cornerback Aydan White’s 84-yard pick-6 was the highlight for the Pack in a game where both defenses grudgingly gave up yards. Running back Demie Sumo-Karngbaye had a 14-yard TD run for the Pack’s first TD.
Texas Tech struck in the final minute of the first half as Donovan Smith had a 24-yard TD throw to Myles Price.
The Pack’s Devin Leary is six-for-12 passing for 38 yards as the Texas Tech secondary has blanketed the Pack’s receivers well.
Price TD: NC State 20, Texas Tech 7
The Red Raiders, stifled by the Pack defense most of the first half, took advantage of a short NCSU punt and a Wolfpack penalty to score on a 60-yard drive. The Pack was called for defensive pass interference in the end zone, and the Red Raiders scored on the next play as Donovan Smith connected with Myles Price for a 24-yard TD throw with 50 seconds left in the half.
White interception return: NC State 20, Texas Tech 0
Pack cornerback Aydan White said during the week that a passing team presents more opportunities for DBs and he relished the challenge. He got one in the second quarter and his 84-yard interception return of a Donovan Smith pass pushed the Pack ahead 20-0.
The Red Raiders had twice converted third downs to move to the NCSU 28. But on fourth-and-1, Smith was under pressure and unloaded a pass that Smith turned into the pick-6 with 4:40 left in the first half.
Sumo-Karngbaye TD: NC State 13, Texas Tech 0
After a strong defensive possession led by linebacker Isaiah Moore, the Pack took advantage of favorable field position at the TTU 43 to score the first touchdown of the game. Devin Leary completed a third-down pass to Thayer Thomas, and the Red Raiders were calling for roughing the passer on the play. On first down from the 14, Demie-Sumo Karngbaye circled left end for the score with 10:13 left in the second period.
Dunn FG: NC State 6, Texas Tech 0
The Pack again moved inside the Red Raiders’ 25 but a sack of Devin Leary, then a holding penalty against Timothy McKay spoiled the possession for NCSU. Christopher Dunn’s 47-yard field goal pushed the Pack lead to 6-0.
Injury update: Red Raiders lose player
Texas Tech linebacker Bryce Ramirez suffered a severe leg injury with 4:02 left in the first period and had to be carted off the field. Ramirez was attended to by medical personnel from Texas Tech and NCSU. The Wolfpack offensive players gave Ramirez a few pats of support before he was taken off.
Dunn FG: NC State 3, Texas Tech 0
After the Pack recovered a Texas Tech punt at the TTU 13, the Wolfpack outsmarted the Red Raiders with some trickery but blew up the play with a penalty and had to settle for Chris Dunn’s 29-yard field goal.
On first-and-goal from the TTU 3, running back Demie Sumo-Karngbaye took a direct snap after quarterback Devin Leary shifted to his right out of the shotgun. Sumo-Karngbaye ran left and pitched to Thayer Thomas in motion back to the right, and Thomas hit an open Leary in the end zone.
But left tackle Anthony Belton was penalized for illegal lineman down field and Dunn was needed for the field goal.
