N.C. State and new head coach Will Wade nabbed the program’s best recruit in nearly a decade with the commitment of high school commit Matthew Able.

Able is listed as a four-star recruit, according to On3, and a five-star recruit by 247Sports. N.C. State’s last five-star commit was Dennis Smith, who was part of the 2016 class. Able is listed at the sixth-best shooting guard in the nation and one of the Top 30 players in the Class of 2025.

The incoming guard simply called the program “home” in a tweet confirming his commitment.

Listed at 6-foot-5 and 190 pounds, the guard comes to N.C. State by way of Sagemont Prep School in Florida, where he averaged 20.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.1 steals during his senior season.

Able was originally committed to Miami under Jim Larrañaga but reopened his recruitment in February. Larrañaga stepped down in December and former Duke assistant Jai Lucas was hired to replace him.

In his second round of recruiting, Able selected N.C. State over programs such as Alabama, Baylor, Michigan, Tennessee and Texas.

According to several reports, Able liked the N.C. State campus and Wade’s vision for the program.

Able is known for his ability to shoot off the dribble in the mid-range and from the 3-point line. The incoming freshman can play with both hands, with the ability to dribble and dunk. Scouts say he has good footwork and can defend well. His athletic build and length should help the team, and Able is expected to add additional strength when he begins a college training program.

He joins Zymicah Wilkins as the other incoming freshman. The two-man recruiting class ranks No. 3 in the ACC, according to On3. Rivals and 247Sports list the small class at No. 6 and No. 8 in the conference, respectively.

N.C. State also picked up commitments from Quadir Copeland and Alyn Breed out of the transfer portal. Both transfers played for Wade at McNeese State.

Wade told reporters at his introductory press conference he wants to build his roster around development and effective transfer portal usage. The goal is to recruit two or three freshmen each class and a handful out of the portal. The remaining players would be retained players. Wade said the first couple of years will be portal heavy as he and the staff get established and begin building its core group of players.

Six Wolfpack players entered the transfer portal after Kevin Keatts’ dismissal, though Wade said he was open to players returning if they felt like N.C. State was still the best program for their development.
