N.C. State men’s basketball is poised to add a new offensive leader to the bench.

Former Georgia assistant Anthony Goins is expected to join new head coach Justin Gainey’s staff, according to sources close to the program, and serve as the team’s offensive coordinator.

The pairing appears to be a solid decision for the Wolfpack. Gainey is a proven defensive specialist, while Goins had the Bulldogs’ offense among one of the best in the nation.

Georgia finished the season ranked No. 16 in offensive efficiency (124.1) — the best in the KenPom era — and No. 12 in adjusted tempo (71.7). It averaged 89.4 points per game, ranking No. 5 in the country, and led Division I with 19.8 fastbreak points per contest.

The Bulldogs, despite the speed of play, took care of the ball. They averaged 10.7 turnovers per game and finished with a 14.3% turnover rate.

Under Goins, Georgia earned back-to-back NCAA Tournament bids. Its March Madness appearance last season was the program’s first in 10 years.

Goins also led the 2024-25 Bulldogs to their best offensive efficiency rating since 2003.

He started his coaching career at Dartmouth during the 2013-14 season. He made stops at Yale, Quinnipiac, Clemson and Boston College. During his time with the Tigers and the Eagles, both teams made a postseason tournament.

Goins, like Gainey, is a North Carolina native. He is originally from Greensboro and attended Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. He graduated from St. John’s in 2008.

This will be Gainey’s first assistant coaching hire. Following his introductory press conference last week, Gainey said he wanted to surround himself with assistants who had experience and could connect with players.

“That’s going to be a huge part,” Gainey said. “Someone, maybe a little younger, that still has experience but can relate to the guys. But, I want to have a variety of characteristics and guys that can come from different backgrounds that can help our guys.”

Due to state law, he was limited on the speed in which he could hire assistants. All vacancies are required to be posted for a minimum of five business days. Gainey’s contract did not take effect until April 1.

He is also expected to retain Patrick Stacy, sources told the N&O, who served as the assistant GM on Will Wade’s staff. Stacy specializes in advanced analytics and scouting.

The transfer portal opened on Tuesday. Gainey and his emerging staff plan to connect with current players to determine their next steps and seek portal players to fill roster needs.
