NC State adds athletes’ majors back to media guides

N.C. State University athletic officials say they will now include the majors athletes are pursuing in media guides after removing them a few years ago out of privacy concerns.

“(We) have begun the process of putting majors back on GoPack and will do so in applicable areas such as media guides going forward,” said Fred Demarest, NCSU’s associate athletic director for communications and marketing.

The switch came after The News & Observer inquired why NCSU had told a Bleacher Report writer that athletes’ majors were private. That information is public. Demarest said staff had made a mistake and he then provided a list of the most popular majors.

He later provided a spreadsheet showing the majors pursued by each athlete in the revenue sports of football and men’s basketball for the past two years.

The University of Alabama had also denied the information on majors to the Bleacher Report writer. It relented after The N&O asked what law allowed that information to be private.
