UNC announces reduced capacity at Kenan Stadium, no season ticket format for 2020
University of North Carolina fans will see reduced capacity at Kenan Stadium this fall due to the coronavirus pandemic, the school announced Monday.
While the joint statement from director of athletics Bubba Cunningham and Rams Club executive director John Montgomery did not specify what the capacity will be, the athletics department, university and state officials and health experts will work together to determine an appropriate level.
The change impacts season ticket holders, as UNC will not follow a season ticket format for 2020. Instead, an individual game request system -- process still to be finalized -- will be used, and all tickets will be provided digitally for contact-free entry.
Season ticket holders face three options for what they can do with their ticket package. One option is to donate their purchase to the athletic department as a “potentially tax deductible gift.” Otherwise, season tickets can be rolled over to 2021 or refunded in full.
“We understand that the uncertainty about the fall sports seasons can be frustrating; we all want answers,” the statement said. “Please know our focus remains on the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and Carolina community – you – which is why we are doing everything we can to determine the best answers. “
On July 9, the ACC announced that it was delaying the start of all Olympic sports competition to Sept. 1. The statement from UNC said it expects updates from the conference in the coming weeks regarding football and Olympic sports.
The ACC’s school presidents have a Wednesday meeting scheduled where they plan to discuss changes to the football schedule and further plans impacting fall sports.
“Many decisions remain about the future of the season – whether and when we will be able to play, how schedules may be altered, what a safe fan capacity will be in our stadium, and what game day may look like on campus,” the statement said. “We continue to plan for football to be played this season.”
