Florida State coach positive for COVID. How could this affect games vs. UNC, Duke, NC State?

ESPN reported Saturday that Florida State football coach Mike Norvell has tested positive for coronavirus. Deputy head coach Chris Thomsen is now acting as head coach.

The CDC recommends anyone with a positive test isolates themselves for 10 days.

Florida State is off this week and plays at Miami in a nationally televised game next Saturday. Norvell will not make the trip. Florida State will host Jackson State Oct. 3 before a run of ACC games at Notre Dame (Oct. 10), North Carolina at home (Oct. 17) and at Louisville (Oct. 24).

Norvell figures to be back for those ACC games, barring no complications, and could also be available for Florida State’s games at N.C. State Nov. 14, home for Clemson Nov. 21 and at Duke Dec. 5.

In a statement to the media, Norvell said he tested positive Friday when the team went through its most recent round but is feeling fine.

He said his wife and daughter tested negative Saturday.

“My result was surprising to me,” Norvell said in his statement, “but we have prepared for a potential positive result among anyone in our program and we will put that plan in place while I’m away. I will remain involved remotely as much as possible to help our team continue to prepare.”

Norvell was hired in December, signed a six-year deal worth more than $26 million.

It is not clear if any Florida State players are affected at this time.
