North Carolina coach Roy Williams got his first commitment of the COVID-19 summer from guard D’Marco Dunn of Fayetteville Westover High School. Dunn made his announcement Wednesday at the school where he had seven tables trimmed with balloons to represent the seven schools he was considering. The 6-foot-3 shooting guard chose Carolina over offers that included Louisville, Texas and Arizona.

Dunn’s family moved to North Carolina a year ago from Tuscon, Arizona after his mother took a job at Fort Bragg. He helped lead Westover to the NCHSAA 3A title game after averaging 20.4 points per game and 7.2 rebounds.

It was very much an odd summer of recruiting with restrictions eliminating the events where Williams would normally get to make in-person evaluations. In this case, he had to rely on watching video clips of Dunn and word of mouth recommendations. They were good enough for the Tar Heels to offer Dunn back in the spring, despite him only playing one season in the state.

Dunn, who is No. 79 in 24/7 Sports Composite Rankings, joins Dontrez Styles, a 6-foot-6 small forward from Kinston, as the Tar Heels first two commitments in the Class of 2021. Styles announced his commitment back in April.
