Simeon Wilcher, a top 15 prospect in the class of 2023, committed to North Carolina on Friday night according to his Twitter account. Wilcher, a 6-foot-4 guard from New Jersey, is No. 14 in the 247 Sports composite rankings and becomes the Tar Heels’ first commit for the class.

Wilcher reportedly had a six-figure offer to join the upstart Overtime Elite league, but turned it down to commit to the Heels. He also turned down the possibility of teaming with his brother, C.J., who plays for Nebraska. Wilcher made an official visit with the Cornhuskers a week before he came to Chapel Hill.

The junior at Roselle Catholic in Roselle, N.J., averaged 12.4 points and 5.7 assists last season as a sophomore during a season shortened to 15 games due to the pandemic. Wilcher also played for the N.Y. Rens, the same grassroots basketball program that current UNC guard R.J. Davis once played for as well.

Wilcher made his official visit to Carolina over last weekend. Seven days later, he chose the Tar Heels about the same time they were celebrating the beginning of Hubert Davis’ era as head coach during Late Night festivities.

Davis talked about the changes he’s made while serving nine seasons as an assistant coach under Roy Williams. One of them was playing two point guards in the same lineup.

Wilcher is a combo guard who could be asked to play some point at UNC. Three of the Heels’ four commitments in the Class of 2022 are frontcourt players. Seth Trimble, a point guard from Wisconsin and the younger brother of former UNC forward J.P. Tokoto, was the only backcourt commitment Davis had secured until Wilcher’s announcement.

Davis’ first recruiting class that also includes 6-foot-9 center/forward Jalen Washington, 6-foot-8 wing Tyler Nickel and 6-foot-9 forward Will Shaver, is currently ranked sixth overall in 247 Sports class rankings.
