North Carolina will spend time prior to its noon kickoff with Wofford thanking the seniors and departing players for being a part of the program. But the Tar Heels may spend the majority of the game looking ahead to their future at quarterback.

Junior quarterback Sam Howell is still a game-time decision after suffering an upper body injury in their loss to Pitt last week. Sophomore Jacolby Criswell and freshman Drake Maye will be thrust in the spotlight if Howell does not play. Presumably Criswell or Maye will be the opening day starter next season, pending Howell’s exodus into the NFL.

“Drake and Jacolby have got an awareness that they may fully be starting their first game and be out there, and they’ve had a really good week,” UNC coach Mack Brown said. “But we’ve also challenged the rest of the guys to play well around them to pick it up and help them.”

Brown said as of Wednesday he still hadn’t determined if and how he would rotate the two quarterbacks in the game. The aim is to let both play, but trying to win the game was most important. The Heels (5-5) need one more win to become bowl eligible.

If they are called into action, Carolina could have slightly different looks on offense. Criswell, 6-foot, 220 pounds, is better as a dual-threat quarterback. Maye, 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, is more of a pocket passer. Brown said the offensive staff would tailor their play calls.

“We would run the offense for each one of them that we feel like they’ll be running in the future,” Brown said.

Saturday’s UNC-Wofford game will be broadcast on Bally Sports South.
