Hubert Davis and Juwan Howard, as NBA players, were once involved in an eight-player trade that sent Davis to the Dallas Mavericks and Howard to the Washington Wizards in 2001. That’s about the extent of their interaction as players, although they have a lot more in common than a league transaction.

Howard took over as head coach of Michigan, his alma mater, back in 2019. Davis is currently getting acclimated to what it’s like coaching in the same arena that he played at North Carolina.

“We all get caught up into the competitive games with the wins and losses, but don’t forget about just enjoying it,” Howard said. “That’s the joy and the passion of the game of we played, but now we’re getting an opportunity to coach and help develop these young men, and someday become a man. Enjoy that moment.”

It will certainly be easier for Davis to enjoy on Wednesday with a win over the No. 24 Wolverines. Both Carolina (4-2) and Michigan (4-2) have endured early setbacks this season. Their meeting in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge will give one team a confidence boost while the loser will be reeling.
