UNC beats Clemson in ACC baseball tournament game, 9-2. Heels face Virginia Tech next
Latest: UNC beat Clemson, 9-2, on Tuesday night at Truist Field.
North Carolina looks to carry its momentum into the ACC baseball tournament, beginning Tuesday with its 7 p.m. matchup against Clemson. The Tar Heels have won 11 of their last 13 games heading into pool play, including a sweep of then-No. 20 Florida State to finish the regular season.
UNC is in Pool A which also features No. 1 seed Virginia Tech. The Heels will play the Hokies on Friday. The winner of the pool advances to Saturday’s quarterfinals. All games will take place at Truist Field in Charlotte.
The eighth-seeded Heels did not face the No. 12 seed Tigers in the regular season, but they’re well aware of Clemson’s offensive power. The Tigers are led by ACC Player of the Year Max Wagner, who hits .379 with 74 RBI and is tied for second nationally with 26 homers.
Carolina lost its series to Virginia Tech 2-1 when the teams played in Chapel Hill at the start of April. But UNC coach Steve Forbes believes his team has improved since then, particularly getting more from their starting pitchers, and they welcome the challenge of winning two games to advance.
“One thing about this group, they’re not going to back down,” Forbes said. “They’re going to be aggressive and, now with that confidence factor, I think they feel like they can beat anybody. And that’s important.”
How to watch?
