The shooting death of a faculty member Monday at UNC cast a pall of sadness over the campus this week as the university community mourned and students sought solace.

North Carolina’s football players were offered support through the UNC Athletics Mental Health and Performance Psychology program. The team was given the option to practice, and UNC’s coaches told the players they could choose whether to attend any team activities.

The decision was made to cancel UNC coach Mack Brown’s first weekly radio show, scheduled for Monday night.

Some form of normalcy will return Saturday when the new football season begins. It will be North Carolina vs South Carolina in Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium in a prime-time game to be shown nationally on ABC.

The No. 21 Tar Heels spent much the week awaiting word from the NCAA on the eligibility of transfer wide receiver Tez Walker. No decision by the NCAA had been reached by Thursday.

Kickoff time and how to watch

The game will be broadcast by ABC, WTVD (channel 11) in the Triangle, with a 7:30 p.m. starting time.
