Utah standout Terrence Brown has committed to the Tar Heels after the transfer guard made a campus visit early last week. Brown announced his commitment via social media on Tuesday. He is the second transfer pickup for UNC head coach Michael Malone and his staff, joining forward and Virginia Tech transfer Neoklis Avdalas.

A junior last season, Brown led Utah in scoring and averaged 19.9 points, 3.8 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 45% from the field. The 6-foot-3 guard was one of 22 players in Division I who scored at least 600 points and dished out 100 assists through games on March 7. He earned All-Big 12 honorable mention honors despite Utah finishing 10–22 and last place in the Big 12.

Brown is an explosive player accustomed to high usage (he was ranked top 15 in usage rate over the past two seasons) who can pressure defenses with his first step and athleticism. He ranked among the top guards 6-foot-3 and under in dunks with 20 last season after recording 30 the previous year at Fairleigh Dickinson. His scoring ability translated to the power conference level, as he posted nine 20-point games in Big 12 play.

Brown is ball-dominant and has ample experience in pick-and-roll situations — specifically the high pick and roll — which often required him to create offense late in the shot clock at Utah.

While Brown had the freedom to play through mistakes at as a Ute, he will likely be asked to make quicker decisions and be more decisive in his shot selection alongside more talent at North Carolina.

After averaging 7.8 points as a freshman at Fairleigh Dickinson, he broke out as a sophomore with 20.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.2 steals per game, earning Northeast Conference Most Improved Player and first-team all-league honors.

He carried that production into the Big 12, where his top performances included 33 points against Kansas State in conference play.

At North Carolina, Brown should bring an immediate scoring punch to a retooled backcourt. His ability to get into the paint and create offense could complement a roster that includes the 6-foot-9 Avdalas.
