Why Matt Able is ‘back and forth’ on decision to attend UNC or stay in NBA Draft

Matt Able didn’t just look like a player caught between two paths Wednesday, but one ready for either.

The former N.C. State guard — and current UNC commit — turned in an efficient performance at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago, finishing with 15 points on 3-for-5 shooting from three in just over 19 minutes in a scrimmage win.

Able’s showing backed up what he’s been saying publicly: he believes he’s ready. But it also underscored why his looming decision — stay in the draft or head to Chapel Hill — may not be so simple.

“It’s definitely a tough decision because I love UNC,” Able said, “and I’m excited to get over there at some point. But, at the same time, I’ve been playing well. I really feel confident in myself and I know what I’m capable of... I’m still back and forth on it. I’ve got to think about it some more and get with my camp and figure it out.”

NBA teams, it seems, have taken notice. Able said he has met with multiple franchises, including the Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic, Indiana Pacers, Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers, with interviews he described as “amazing.”

“Obviously first round would be nice,” he said. “That’s the goal and that’s what I think I’m capable of. It definitely varies, especially depending on the team, the fit and the situation.”

Able has until May 27 to withdraw from the draft and retain his college eligibility. He said new UNC coach Michael Malone has been in frequent contact and he praised the NBA champion’s honesty and vision for the program.

“If I do come back to UNC, I’ll be playing for a great coach,” Able said.

Able believes that environment — particularly a system with NBA principles — could expand his skillset. At UNC, he expects to operate more as a secondary ball-handler and showcase more of his playmaking.

There are still tangible areas for growth for the rising sophomore. Able said he’s already added eight pounds since the end of the season, emphasizing the need to handle the physicality of the NBA game and improve his finishing. Able’s also focused on refining his shot.

“I think (my shot) is already good, but it could be elite,” Able said.

For now, Able is weighing two options for next year — one in NBA, the other in Chapel Hill. Speaking with the media in Chicago on Wednesday, acknowledged the familiarity of the Triangle, having spent last season at NC State, and the added intrigue of possibly returning on the other side of the rivalry.

“I know all about it,” Able said. “I’m excited, if I do come back, to be a part of it and win.”

Able looked the part, too, wearing a UNC T-shirt under a gray Jumpman zip-up as he answered questions at the NBA Draft Combine.

But if his performance this week has been any indication, he has a real choice to make.
