North Carolina freshman Theo Pinson on Monday underwent surgery on his left foot, more than three months after suffering a broken bone in it during the Tar Heels' victory at Wake Forest on Jan. 21.
Pinson underwent his procedure at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, UNC announced on Monday. He is expected to be able to particpate in "basketball activities" in time for the start of next season, Doug Halverson, the UNC trainer, said in a statement.
Pinson missed 10 consecutive games after fracturing the fifth metatarsal in his left foot during that victory at Wake Forest. He returned late in the regular season but then missed four more games because of the injury.
Pinson, a shooting guard and small forward, averaged 2.7 points and three rebounds in 27 games. His role is expected to increase with the departure of J.P. Tokoto, who after his junior season declared his eligibility for the NBA draft.
