UNC and football coach Mack Brown agree to a one-year contract extension
North Carolina has agreed to a one-year contract extension with football coach Mack Brown that will run through the 2024 season, the school announced in a press release Saturday night.
The terms of Brown’s contract will remain the same. He’ll continue to make $3.5 million, and is eligible for performance-based bonuses.
Brown coached the Tar Heels to a 6-6 regular season in the first year of his second stint as the head coach. The Tar Heels were 5-18 in the two seasons prior.
UNC will play Temple (8-4) in the Military Bowl on Dec. 27. Also, UNC sold out all six of its home games.
“Mack’s return has had an outstanding impact — not just in Kenan Stadium, but throughout the Carolina community,’‘ Cunningham said in a press release. “Our students are winning on the field and doing well in the classroom, our fan base is energized and we are all excited about building on the great successes of this season.”
The terms of Brown’s contract do not change.
Brown’s base salary is $750,00 per year and he makes $2 million in supplemental compensation. He will continue to make $200,000 from Nike, and will get $50,000 in expenses per year. He is also making $500,000 per year in personal services from multimedia rights holder Learfield.
His contract is for five years.
Brown, 68, will be 73 by the time his contract ends. He previously coached the Tar Heels from 1988 to 1997. His overall record as UNC’s head coach is 75-52-1.
“I love our staff and these kids and I’m planning on being here for a long, long time,” Brown said in a statement. “Because Sally and I love UNC and Chapel Hill, we won’t coach anywhere else, which gives this place as much stability as anywhere in the country.”
