UNC football and assistant coach Scott Boone part ways
North Carolina assistant coach Scott Boone is no longer a part of the Tar Heels’ football staff, a spokesperson confirmed on Thursday.
“We appreciate all that he did for us this season in helping us get to and win the bowl game, but after the season, there were some philosophical differences and a mutual decision to part ways,” UNC spokesperson Jeremy Sharpe said.
Boone, who just completed his first season with the program, coached special teams and outside linebackers. UNC’s special teams had its ups and downs in 2019, but for the most part held their own.
The Tar Heels blocked three kicks, which was tied for 14th in the nation. They averaged 41.3 yards per punt and had a 67.9 percent field-goal percentage. They didn’t allow any punt returns or kick returns for touchdowns.
The Tar Heels finished 7-6 in 2019 and won their bowl game against Temple on Dec. 27.
UNC plans to conduct a national search for Boone’s replacement.
Before joining UNC coach Mack Brown’s staff, Boone spent a year as a defensive analyst at Wake Forest.
His coaching career began as an assistant coach at Wabash College in 1983. He also spent time at Randolph-Macon College, William & Mary, Nevada and Arizona.
