Charlotte’s Trey Wertz commits to Notre Dame over UNC, Arizona and Butler
Two weeks ago, after first announcing his intention to transfer from Santa Clara, Trey Wertz became one of the most sought-after transfers in the country. He received interest from at least 40 schools. But on Saturday, he chose one:
Notre Dame.
He made his announcement on Twitter Saturday afternoon.
Wertz, a 6-5, 185-pound guard from Charlotte, spent two seasons at Santa Clara in Silicon Valley, where he averaged 12.1 points in 62 games. He started in 58 games.
During his sophomore season, he shot 48.9 percent overall and 40 percent from behind the 3-point line.
Wertz chose Notre Dame over Arizona, Butler and North Carolina.
Wertz, a business major, said he was on pace to graduate in three years at Santa Clara and that he wants to complete his master’s degree during his final year of eligibility. Academics, Wertz said, were a big factor in his decision.
The offensive scheme was also important to the guard from Charlotte. He said he was seeking a program with a spread offense that offers him better spacing as a combo guard.
Wertz is also the son of Charlotte Observer High School sports columnist Langston Wertz Jr.
Wertz had previously only visited North Carolina, his father’s alma mater, but said he had done virtual tours at Butler and Notre Dame since COVID-19 prevented in-person visits.
