Three From Women’s Golf To Play In World Am

– Sophomores Leonie Bettel and Naomi Ko and Wolfpack alumna Rachael Taylor of the NC State women’s golf team have been recently selected to represent their home countries in the 2016 World Amateur Women’s Team Championship.

Bettel will represent Austria while Ko has been chosen for Team Canada and Taylor will compete for Scotland. The championship will be held Sept. 14-17 at Mayakoba El Camaleón and Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Clubs in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

Ko recently wrapped up play in her third professional tournament of the summer, as she competed at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open. Despite missing the 36-hole cut, she shot strong scores of 74 and73 for a three-over par total of 147. She additionally played in the United States Women’s Open and Portland Classic this summer, which are both sponsored by the LPGA.

Taylor has also had a summer filled with strong tournament play, as she recently advanced to the second stage of LPGA Qualifying School on Aug. 28. She finished 27th overall with an even-par score of 288 (76-67-73-72).

Bettel had a strong showing over the summer in various European amateur and professional tournaments, finishing 27th in the event standings at the Citizenguard LETAS Trophy 2016 and helping Team Austria finish 3-0 at the European Ladies Amateur Team Championship.

Each team has two or three players and plays 18-holes of stroke play for four days. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team’s score for the championship and will take home the Espirito Santo Trophy.

Men’s Basketball

NCCU: The Eagles program has restocked for the upcoming season with head coach LeVelle Moton announcing the signing of a class of six newcomers. Alex Mills, Pablo Rivas, Ron Trapps, Michael Wolfe, Raasean Davis, and Rashann London all join the program as transfers.

Women’s Basketball

Wake Forest: Head coach Jen Hoover announced her team’s nonconference schedule for the upcoming 2016-17 basketball season on Tuesday. The slate features six teams that participated in either the NCAA Tournament or WNIT, all of which finished in the Top 100 nationally in RPI.

Men’s Soccer

Duke: Blue Devils graduate student goalkeeper Robert Moewes’ spectacular performance in the teams’ 1-0 win at No. 9 ULCA has not gone unnoticed. Moewes was named to both the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer Teams of the Week following his eight-save showing in Los Angeles. Moewes has also been named ACC Defensive Player of the week.

Elon: Coming off an undefeated weekend at its home tournament and sporting a 3-1 record overall, the Phoenix team was ranked at No. 4 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Midwest Region Poll. The Phoenix also received votes in the NSCAA Top 25 poll.

Women’s Soccer

UNC: Tarheel redshirt senior goalkeeper Lindsey Harris has been named this week’s ACC Defensive Player of the Week. Harris made 13 saves in two matches to help lead North Carolina to a 1-0-1 weekend in the Duke Nike Classic.

Softball

Elon: The Phoenix softball team and head coach Kathy Bocock has announced the program’s 2016 fall schedule . The eight-game slate features contests at in-state foes and longtime rivals as well as four games at Hunt Softball Park.

Volleyball

Shaw: The Lady Bears will attempt to earn their first victory of the 2016 season hosting St. Andrews in a non-conference matchup Wednesday, Sept. 7, inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.

Mount Olive: Trojans women's volleyball junior outside hitter Britni Johnson has been named Conference Carolinas Player of the Week in a news release issued by the conference office Tuesday. Johnson amassed 60 kills, 39 digs, and a .268 hitting percentage during the Trojans' four-game run at the 2ndAnnual Spike Out Hunger Challenge hosted by Winston-Salem State University. The Durham, North Carolina native helped lead UMO to a 3-1 record in the challenge, the program's best start to a season since 2004.

Women’s Golf

NC State: The Wolfpack have added Christina Lu to its 2016-17 roster, as announced by head coach Page Marsh. Lu is a native of Yunnan, China, but trained at the Mike Bender Golf Academy in Longwood, Fla., for two years prior to coming to Raleigh. She will enter the season as a freshman on the team.

Mount Olive: The Lady Trojans took second place at the Cutter Creek Invitational hosted by Barton College over the weekend. The Trojans were led by junior Julia Kaeding who finished third overall in the tournament.

Duke: The 2016-17 women’s college golf season will kick off in less than three weeks and the Blue Devils will enter the year ranked No. 5 nationally as Golfweek’s Lance Ringler has compiled his preseason top 30 listing. Coming off its second straight semifinal appearance at the NCAA Championship match play competition, the Blue Devils return four of five starters under six-time NCAA Champion head coach Dan Brooks.

Field Hockey

Duke: After capturing the B1G/ACC Cup for the second consecutive year with a pair of victories over ranked opponents, the Blue Devils moved up to No. 2 in this week’s Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll. Following the tournament, junior Alyssa Chillano was awarded ACC Defensive Player of the Week for her performance in group play.

Women’s Lacrosse

Duke: Former James Madison standout Morgan Heisman has joined the Blue Devil women’s lacrosse program as a volunteer assistant coach, head coach Kerstin Kimel announced Tuesday. Prior to joining the staff, Heisman spent one season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Dartmouth in 2013. That season saw the Big Green compile an 11-8 ledger and make an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Cross Country

Elon: Picking up where he left off from his outstanding freshman campaign, sophomore Nick Ciolkowski of the Phoenix has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week as announced by the league office. Ciolkowski, the defending CAA individual men’s cross country champion and the league’s Male Runner and Rookie of the Year last season, won the individual title in the Phoenix’s season opener at the Elon Opener last week.

Miscellaneous

Durham Sports Club: The guest speaker for Wednesday’s meeting will be Joe Breschi, UNC Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach, whose team just won the National Championship with victory over University of Maryland. The meeting will be held at Croasdaile Country Club at noon, cost is $25 per person.

Duke: The NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee is recognizing Blue Devils’ Athletic Director Kevin White as this quarter’s Champion of Diversity and Inclusion.
