Maguire enters final round at WATC tied sixth overall

With one round remaining at the World Amateur Team Championship, Leona Maguire of the Duke University women’s golf program remains tied sixth overall in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

A two-time All-American at Duke, Maguire opened her third round one-under-par through six holes with a birdie on No. 4. She then suffered bogeys on the seventh and ninth holes to drop to one-over. Once again, Maguire finished strong with back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes to finish at one-under-par for the day, 71. She played her final nine holes of the day at two-under-par.

Over the three days of play, Duke freshman Ana Belac is tied for 132nd with rounds of 79, 85 and 80.

Hye jin Choi leads the individual race with a nine-under-par, 207. Maguire is six shots off the lead with a three-under, 213.

In the team competition, the Republic of Korea leads with a 19-under-par, 413, while Switzerland (427), Thailand (431), Denmark (432) and Ireland (432) round out the top five teams.

Meanwhile, recent Duke University graduate Celine Boutier opened her professional golf career this week with a victory. Boutier competed in the Fort Rucker Ladies Open of the National Women’s Golf Association and registered a six-under-par ledger to win by one stroke at the Silver Wings Golf Course in Fort Rucker, Ala.

Tennis

UNC/Duke: As men’s and women’s tennis begin fall schedules this weekend, Oracle and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association have announced their 2016 Collegiate Tennis Men’s and Women’s Division I Preseason Rankings.

Reigning ACC player of the Year North Carolina’s Hayley Carter is ranked No. 1 in singles. Carter found herself in the top 15 of the doubles rankings with partner Jessie Aney (T14). North Carolina’s Sara Daavettila (1) and Duke’s Meible Chi (6) were also in the Newcomer/Freshmen rankings.

North Carolina’s Ronnie Schneider (10) was placed in the top 10 for singles. Simon Soendergaard of North Carolina (8) and Robert Levine of Duke (9) were also in the Newcomer rankings.

Duke: Members of the women’s tennis team opened fall play Friday morning, competing in day one of the three-day Duke Bonk Invitational at the Cary Tennis Park. The first day was highlighted by the play of senior Chalena Scholl, who remained undefeated in doubles and singles.

Football

UNC: The Tar Heels finally make their home debut when they welcome James Madison to Kenan Stadium on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. This is the latest calendar date the team has played its home opener since the 2010 season.

Men’s Golf

N.C. State: The team officially opens the 2016-17 season Sunday at the Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate at The Grove in College Grove, Tenn. Wolfpack golfers are paired with competitors from No. 3 Georgia 10:36-11:08 a.m. Sunday.

Duke: The team will hit the road for the first time in 2016-17 next week when it plays in the Inverness Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday. Seven team members will make the trip to the Toledo area: seniors Max Greyserman and Matt Oshrine, juniors Jake Shuman, Ben Silverman and Adam Wood, sophomore Alex Smalley and freshman Chandler Eaton. Monday’s 36-hole day begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

Volleyball

UNC: No. 8 Tar Heels raced to a 3-0 sweep of Sam Houston State on Friday afternoon to open the TCU Horned Frog Invitational. The team needed just one hour and 16 minutes to defeat the Bearkats, claiming the match with set scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-13. With the win, they improve to 7-1, while SHSU falls to 6-7.

Elon: Elon tallied its ninth straight win and third straight sweep Friday with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-16) victory at The Citadel in the Bulldog Invitational in McAlister Field House. The Phoenix (12-2) saw a match-high 11 kills from Kam Terry followed by another 10 by Sydney Busa. The team won 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-8) final against Savannah State earlier Friday.

St. Augustine’s: The team opens volleyball conference play in the CIAA Round-Up I. The Lady Falcons face host Chowan at 12 p.m. and Virginia State University at 3 p.m. on Saturday. They take on Elizabeth City State University at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Lady Falcons (2-4 overall) are led by outside hitter Olivia Porter and setter Meghan Mahon. Porter leads the CIAA in kills (130) and kills per set (5.20) and Mahon is the league leader in assists per set (8.84).

N.C. State: The team is set for its final weekend of nonconference play as the Campbell Camels head to Raleigh Saturday and UNCW visits Sunday. The Wolfpack has been extremely productive this season offensively and leads the ACC with 13.70 kills per set.

Duke: The Blue Devils picked up their fourth straight-set victory of the 2016 season, sweeping Campbell 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-18) Friday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Freshman Jamie Stivers and senior Jordan Tucker paced the offense with 15 and 11 kills, respectively.

Field Hockey

UNC: Third-ranked North Carolina fell to No. 18 Boston College on Friday afternoon 2-1 in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at Newton Field Hockey Complex. The Tar Heels are 5-2 on the season and 1-1 in ACC play while Boston improved to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the ACC with its first win over UNC since 2008. Next up for the Tar Heels is a game at No. 20 Maine on Sunday.

Duke: In a meeting of unbeaten ACC squads, second-ranked Blue Devils emerged with a 2-1 victory over No. 6 Louisville Friday evening at the Cardinals’ Trager Stadium. The team moved to 7-0 on the season to secure the best start in program history. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Sammi Steele totaled six saves and senior midfielder Hunter Bracale provided the game winner in the 63rd minute as head coach Pam Bustin’s squad notched its fifth victory over a top-20 opponent.

Women’s Soccer

N.C. State: The team knocked off No. 7 North Carolina 1-0 in Chapel Hill for its sixth win in a row and its fourth consecutive shutout. Kia Rankin scored the only goal of the match after Paige Griffiths’ pass opened up the UNC defense. Rankin ran onto the through ball and hit it past the UNC keeper for the goal in the 67th minute.

Duke: After concluding a challenging nonconference slate over the weekend, the seventh-ranked team (5-2-1) will open ACC action Saturday with 16th-ranked Boston College at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils have two matches remaining of a seven-match homestand. The Blue Devils have totaled a 3-1-1 mark during the stretch.

Wake Forest: The team dropped its ACC opener, the team’s first loss of the season, by a 2-1 margin to No. 13 Clemson at Spry Stadium on Friday night. The Tigers (6-2, 1-0 ACC) scored back-to-back goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half, before the Demon Deacons (8-1, 0-1 ACC) pushed forward in the final 30 minutes.

Men’s Soccer

Elon: For the first time in 2016, the team will face a ranked opponent as the Phoenix heads to 24th-ranked Radford for the third game of a four-match road trip. The match is slated for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.

Wake Forest/Duke: Tenth-ranked Wake Forest netted two early goals Friday night against No. 17 Duke at Koskinen Stadium on the way to a 2-0 victory to tie the program record with a fifth-straight shutout. The win moves the Demon Deacons to 5-1-1 on the season. The Blue Devils now stand at 2-2-1 after dropping back-to-back ACC games. The victory moves the Deacs to 105-104-34 all-time in conference play to push Wake Forest over the .500 mark in ACC action for the first time in program history.

N.C. State: The team fell in its first Atlantic Coast Conference road contest of the season, losing 3-0 at No. 23 Virginia Tech Friday evening. The Wolfpack outshot the Hokies 14-11 in the match but was unable to find the scoring touch.

Lacrosse

Raleigh Sports Club: Jenny Levy, head coach of UNC’s women’s lacrosse team, and Joe Breschi, head coach of UNC’s men’s lacrosse will be guest speakers at the Raleigh Sports Club. UNC men and women’s lacrosse won the most recent NCAA national championships. Not since Princeton in 1994 had one school won both the men’s and women’s national lacrosse championships.

Meetings are in Bradley Hall in Highland UMC, 1901 Ridge Road. Buffet lines open at 11:30 a.m. and the meeting is noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday. Member fee is $15. Guest fee is $35.

Cross Country

N.C. State: The women’s team claimed its third consecutive Adidas XC Challenge title Friday night. The men’s team finished second, after winning a tiebreaker with Virginia. Senior Erika Kemp led the Pack, finishing fourth with a time of 17:02.4. Rachel Koon and Megan Moye followed, finishing fifth and six, respectively. Bianca Bishop (11th), Megan Vaughn (14th) and Rebekah Greengrass (16th) completed the top six finishers for the Wolfpack.

For the men’s team, Aubrey Myjer, a senior transfer from Columbia, finished ninth in 18:17.3, and Ben Barrett, a redshirt sophomore, finished 11th with a time of 18:18.1. Patrick Sheehan finished closely behind Barrett, placing 12th overall with time 18:20.9. The rest of the Wolfpack’s scorers were Aaron Thomas (17th), Wyatt Maxey (21st), Alec Thomas (32nd) and Zack Langston (37th).

UNC: Caroline Alcorta demolished the competition at the Adidas XC Challenge on Friday to take first in 16:42.4. Alcorta’s victory is the second win she’s garnered this season in two races. Her win helped the women’s team take second.
