UNC secures 10th consecutive volleyball win with sweep of Syracuse

The North Carolina volleyball team captured its 10th straight victory on Sunday, rolling to a sweep of Syracuse to open ACC play a perfect 10-0 for the first time in program history. The Tar Heels (18-2, 10-0 ACC) took down the Orange, 25-21, 25-12, 25-21, to claim their third consecutive sweep and sixth in ACC play.

The Tar Heels had a balanced attack against the Orange (5-15, 4-6), with five hitters totaling between six and 11 kills. Taylor Treacy and Taylor Leath led with 11 kills apiece, while Hayley McCorkle tallied eight, Taylor Borup struck seven and Taylor Fricano slammed six.

Duke: Four Yellow Jackets recorded double-doubles to help Georgia Tech end the Blue Devils’ six-match win streak with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-125, 20-25, 24-26) decision Sunday in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Shaw: The Bears’ 14-game winning streak was snapped by the hands of Fayetteville State with a 3-2 loss on Saturday. The Bears lost the first set 25-17 before charging back with a 25-21 win in set two but FSU took the third 25-20. Shaw staged its comeback in the match with a 25-23 win in set four but came up short 15-13 in the final set.

Wake Forest: The Deacons came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Clemson 3-2 on Sunday. The Deacons have forced a fifth set in four straight matches.

Women’s Soccer

UNC: The Tar Heels completed a successful weekend as the Tar Heels knocked off Syracuse 3-1 Sunday. Coupled with Thursday’s 3-0 victory at Pittsburgh, the Tar Heels improved to 10-3-3 on the season and 5-2-2 in the ACC.

Duke: The Blue Devils closed a challenging two-match road trip Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Pittsburgh. With Sunday’s win, the team improved to 12-3-2 overall and 7-1-1 in ACC action. With a win Thursday in the regular-season finale against Clemson, the Blue Devils will claim the third ACC regular-season title in school history (1994, 2011).

N.C. State: The Wolfpack (9-7-1, 3-5-1 ACC) nearly earned a big result Sunday at Clemson, but the Tigers got the 2-1 win.

Wake Forest: A late goal cost the Demon Deacons in a 1-0 loss to No. 11 Notre Dame at Spry Stadium on Sunday.

ECU: The Pirates could not hold onto an early lead and suffered a 3-2 double-overtime loss at Central Florida in American Athletic Conference action Sunday.

Men’s Soccer

N.C. State: The Wolfpack saw its two-match shutout victory streak come to an end during the home finale Sunday, falling 3-0 to visiting Louisville. The Wolfpack closes the regular season at Boston College on Saturday.

Women’s Tennis

Duke: The doubles team of junior Samantha Harris and sophomore Ellyse Hamlin extended its run Sunday after earning a semifinal victory at the ITA Regional Championships in Chapel Hill. The final of the doubles competition is set for 10 a.m. Monday. Freshman Meible Chi also reached the quarterfinals of the tournament, before falling to North Carolina’s top-ranked rookie Sara Daavettila 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-0.

Men’s Tennis

N.C. State: The Wolfpack concluded its dominating performance at the Wolfpack Invitational, as it swept the championship matches on the final day of competition. Nick Horton, Georgiy Malyshev and Paul Spencer won their respective finals to cap off the weekend with 4-0 records.

Elon: The Phoenix closed out its fall season at the Wolfpack Invitational hosted by N.C. State. Taylor Foote and Salvador Mijares went unbeaten in doubles to win the White doubles draw, while Chris Humphreys advanced to the championship match of the White singles draw.

Field Hockey

UNC: Senior Lauren Moyer and sophomore Malin Evert scored two goals each as the Tar Heels won 5-1 at Liberty on Sunday. Sophomore Ashley Hoffman also had a goal for the Tar Heels, who improved to 13-4. The host Flames fell to 6-8.

Wake Forest: The Deacons defeated Northeastern 2-1 on Sunday in the team’s first overtime game of the season. Rachel Hirsch scored the winning goal in the second minute of extra play.
