Millbrook golfer Franken signs with N.C. State
The N.C. State men’s golf team added another signee to its 2015 class.
Stephen Franken of Millbrook High School will join the Wolfpack for the 2015-16 season. Ranked 57th in the country by the American Junior Golf Association, Franken was the News & Observer’s Male Golfer of the Year in 2014. Franken was the runner-up in the 2014 NCHSAA 4A championship.
Lacrosse
Chowan: The Hawks fell to 0-3 after a 21-8 loss to Coker on Thursday. Mackenzie Reid scored three goals for Chowan. Kamile Smith and Charisse Wilcox each found the back of the net twice.
Basketball
Elon: Phoenix guard Elijah Bryant was named the Colonial Athletic Association’s men’s rookie of the year. Bryant is the first player in program history to be receive the honor. He was also a third-team All-CAA selection and named to the league’s five-player all-freshman team. Bryant leads all league freshmen in scoring at 13.9 points per game.
Belmont Abbey: Senior forward McKenzie Owen of Burlington was named the Conference Carolinas Women’s Basketball Player of the Year in a vote of the league's head coaches. Owen has started all 29 games and leads the conference in scoring at 20.1 points per game.
Track and field
Saint Augustine’s: Eleven Falcons athletes will represent the team at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held March 13-14 in Birmingham, Ala. Eight Falcons qualified for the men's events: JaQuan Demiel, Burkheart Ellis Jr. of Raleigh, Khari Herbert, Kevaughn Hewitt, Immanuel Hutchinson, Daniel Jamieson, Omar Johnson and David Shaw of Red Springs. Three Lady Falcons qualified: Shakinah Brooks of Raleigh, Shamia Lassiter and Ornella Livingston.
