Kupcho Maintains Lead at NCAA Athens Regional
The Wake Forest women’s golf team continued play Tuesday at the NCAA Athens Regional with the second round at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Sophomore Jennifer Kupcho maintained her lead at the event, shooting a 2-under 70.
Kupcho is the 36-hole leader at 6-under after shooting her school-record 11th consecutive round under par. She holds a one-shot lead over Lauren Stephenson of Alabama and a three-shot lead over three other players.
As a team, the Demon Deacons shot 14-over during the second round and remained in 15th place at 34-over through 36 holes. The top six teams and three highest individuals from teams not advancing will qualify for the NCAA Championships, held later this month in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Sierra Sims shot even-par 72 during the second round to remain at 5-over for the tournament. Erica Herr had a second round 77 and Anna Wears shot 83 to round out the Demon Deacons lineup. Antonia Eberhard was not able to play Tuesday’s round due to injury.
The NCAA Athens Regional concluded Wednesday at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
UNC: The women’s tennis team shot a 9-over-par 297 on Tuesday in the second round of the NCAA Athens Regional. After two days, the Tar Heels stand at 23-over par and is in 10h place.
Campbell: Nadine White and Desiree Andersson were tied for 20th individually and the Camels are tied for 10th on the team leader board through 36 holes of the NCAA Women’s Golf Albuquerque Regional Championship.
N.C. State: Sophomore Laura Kowohl remains in the top five of the NCAA Albuquerque Regional individual standings after turning in a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to sit in a tie for fourth.
Duke: The Charles Hamilton Hargrave Most Valuable Player award went to freshman Nick Stachowiak on the men’s side and senior Chalena Scholl, a repeat winner, for the women’s team. Meanwhile, with 18 holes remaining at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional, the third-seeded women’s team sat in fourth place following an even-par ledger of 288 Tuesday at the 6,637-yard, par 72 The Championship Course at the University of New Mexico.
Baseball
Wake Forest: A big first inning came back to haunt No. 16 Demon Deacons (32-15) in a 5-3 loss to High Point (26-18) on Tuesday. The Panthers plated four runs in the opening frame, which proved to be enough for the victory.
UNC: Ashton McGee’s RBI double in the 10th gave No. 3 Tar Heels a 7-6 win over Davidson Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. The victory is their seventh in a row, fifth consecutive comeback win and a third straight in walk-off fashion.
Duke/Campbell: Sophomore Griffin Conine launched a three-run homer and four Blue Devils pitchers combined to shut out the Camels in a 9-0 victory Tuesday at Jack Coombs Field. Duke improved to 24-23 on the season while Campbell fell to 21-26.
Elon: In its final midweek game of the regular season, the Phoenix dropped a 16-6 decision to the Liberty Flames. The team will return home for its final six games of the regular season. The Phoenix will wrap up CAA play with a three-game series with UNCW this weekend. The set is slated to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday.
St. Augustine’s Timothy Carter and Michael Keels were named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Division II Academic All-District Baseball Team. The student-athletes were honored for their academic and athletic achievements.
Softball
Elon: Five members earned All-CAA honors as the league office announced its 2017 postseason awards on Tuesday. Junior pitcher Kiandra Mitchum and junior outfielder Kara Shutt represented the Phoenix on the All-CAA first team. Seniors Alaina Hall and Carey Million picked up second team honors for the maroon and gold while fellow senior Emily Roper represented the program on the league’s All-Academic Team.
Track and Field
Wake Forest: Jen Esposito and Elijah Shalaway have been named ACC Performers of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Esposito was named the ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week, and Shalaway was named the ACC Men’s Field Performer of the Week.
St. Augustine’s: The men’s team is ranked sixth and the women are ranked 12th in the latest NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Rankings released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Tuesday.
Men’s Soccer
Mount Olive: The team will host its summer youth day camp June 19 through June 23. Boys and girls ages 4 through 12 are invited to take part in the four-day camp. The camp’s three points of emphasis are ball control, fun, and small-sided-games. The fee for the camp includes four half-days of training by coaches, a camp t-shirt, and prizes.
Football
Shaw: The program will be holding a Prospect Camp on Thursday, June 15 at Southern Durham High School. Registration is now open on the athletic website. The prospect camp is designed for high school (9th-12th grade) players only who want to be recognized as prospective student-athletes.
Miscellaneous
Wake Forest: Three of the university’s athletic programs have been honored with NCAA Public Recognition Awards for the 2015-16 academic year. Women’s golf and tennis as well as the men’s cross country team all received recognition for their 2015-16 Academic Progress Rate scores. The APR is a multi-year rate based on the most recent four years of data and is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team.
