Miami takes marathon opener at ACC Championship

It only seemed as if the opening game of the 2017 ACC Baseball Championship might never end. Miami’s Joe Gomez had other ideas.

Gomez’s single through the right side with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning scored Edgar Michelangeli from third base and lifted the sixth-seeded Hurricanes to a 6-5 win over the 10th-seeded Yellow Jackets in Tuesday’s Pool C marathon opener at Louisville Slugger Field.

The winning hit ended a four-hour and 19-minute contest that had been tied at 5-5 since the top of the fifth inning.

Gomez’s heroics also made a winner of Andrew Cabezas, the fourth Miami pitcher of the day who delivered 6 1/3 innings of stellar relief. Cabezas (5-3) retired 17 consecutive batters during one stretch and struck out 10.

Zac Ryan (3-5) worked the final 4 2/3 innings for the Yellow Jackets (27-27) and took the loss.

Georgia Tech was back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m., when it faced third-seeded Wake Forest (38-17) as Pool C play continued. Miami (30-26) will face the Demon Deacons at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
