College Notebook: NC Central softball beats Maryland-Eastern Shore

The N.C. Central softball team scored 17 runs on 19 hits in powering past visiting Maryland Eastern Shore in a nonconference doubleheader sweep on a rainy Thursday afternoon at Parkwood Athletic Field.

▪ Saint Augustine’s: Akera McPhaul was named CIAA Defensive Player of the Week and Meranda Zanni was chosen CIAA Pitcher of the Week.

McPhaul had four putouts, four assists and no errors at the second baseman position in a doubleheader sweep of Bluefield State College on March 13. She had one putout and one assist in a 6-3 win in the first game. McPhaul had three putouts and three assists in a 4-1 victory in the second game.


Saint Augustine’s: Roberto Rivera was named CIAA Baseball Defensive Player of the Week and Philip Hathcock was selected CIAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week.


Duke: Through three rounds of pool play, freshman Pascual Di Tella leads the three Duke men’s fencers at the NCAA Fencing Championships, currently third in the saber competition. As a school, Duke is ninth in the team standings with 24 points.

Track and Field

Saint Augustine’s: Ten Falcons scholar-athletes were named Indoor Track & Field All-Americans by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

For the first time, scholar-athletes who finished ninth through 12th were named to the All-America Second-Team.
