5 Trojans picked in MLB Draft

For the first time since 2008, the University of Mount Olive baseball team had five players selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Bruce Zimmermann was selected in the fifth round with the 140th overall pick by the Atlanta Braves. He concluded his senior campaign with a 9-2 record on the mound with 129 strikeouts, tying the single-season strikeout record.

Ricky Surum was selected in the 16th round with the 482nd overall pick by the New York Yankees. Surum led the Trojans with a .372 batting average with 61 RBI, 12 home runs, 19 doubles and five triples.

With the 679th overall selection in the 23rd round, the Tampa Bay Rays picked Zack Mozingo. He broke the single-season saves record this season, finishing the year with 13, the third-highest in NCAA DII, to go along with a 1.22 ERA.

Senior Austin Hutchison was picked in the 26th round with the 783rd overall choice by the Seattle Mariners. Hutchison finished the season with a 12-1 record and a 1.82 ERA, leading all pitchers nationally in NCAA Division II with 12 victories and finishing fourth nationally with seven complete games this season, breaking the program record for single-season complete games.

Junior Kodi Whitley was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals with the 814th overall pick in the 27th round. After missing more than a season and a half with an injury, Whitley returned to the mound late in the 2017 regular season and did not allow an earned run in 5.1 innings, striking out seven.

Wake Forest: On the NCBWA All-America teams, Stuart Fairchild was selected as a first team All-American outfielder and Ben Breazeale was named the second team All-American catcher.

The Perfect Game/Rawlings All-America teams featured Fairchild as a first team outfielder, Breazeale as the second-team catcher and Gavin Sheets as an honorable mention first baseman. On the D1Baseball teams, Fairchild was named a first team outfielder and Sheets picked as the third team DH.

Those three were also named to the 2017 Atlantic-ABCA/Rawlings All-Region first team, joined by third baseman Johnny Aiello. The second team also featured pitcher Parker Dunshee and second baseman Jake Mueller.

Campbell: Matthew Barefoot has been named to the 2017 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Freshman All-America team as a first team outfield selection.

Softball

Elon: The team saw four members of its program receive first team honors on the 2017 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association University Division All-State Teams on Thursday.

Carey Million was in the NCCSIA first team spot at catcher while Kiandra Mitchum was one of the two pitchers who received first team All-State laurels. Alaina Hall and Kara Shutt rounded out the Phoenix’s selections in the outfield as Elon tied UNCW with the most first team honorees with four.

Women’s Golf

Duke: Rising senior Leona Maguire advanced to the round of 16 at the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship on Thursday. Maguire will go up against Beatrice Wallin of Sweden.

Men’s Golf

N.C. State: Christian Salzer has qualified for the 2017 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship after shooting a 66 to earn medalist honors at the Santee National Golf Club. The championship will be played July 17-22 at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kansas.

Women’s Basketball

Wake Forest: Head coach Jen Hoover announced Thursday that Lisa Cermignano has joined the Demon Deacon staff as an assistant coach. Coming to Winston-Salem with over 20 years of collegiate coaching experience, Cermignano will work primarily with the guards.
