NCSU’s Charleston, Duke’s Gochenour named ACC Freshman of the Year
N.C. State’s Cravont Charleston was voted the ACC Men’s Freshman of the Year while Duke’s Katelyn Gochenour is the top women’s rookie.
The accolades, announced Friday, were determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Charleston won the 100 meters, the 200 meters and led off the winning 4x100 meter relay team for the Wolfpack while earning Men’s Track MVP honors at last month’s ACC Outdoor Championships. The Charlotte freshman ran the second-fastest time in school history – a wind-aided 10.07 – that ranked 11th nationally in 2017. He added the ACC gold medal in the 200 meters with a personal best time of 20.76. Charleston also posted the ACC’s fastest time in 100 meters during the regular season (10.24 at the Penn Relays).
Gochenour capped her first collegiate season with a school-record toss of 178-0 (54.26) to finish sixth in the women’s javelin competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The first team All-America honoree had previously taken the bronze medal at the ACC Outdoor Championships with a toss of 167-5 (51.03). The Logan, Iowa, native also registered a mark of 167-10 (51.16) to place fifth at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Lexington, Ky., in May.
St. Augustine’s: Standout hurdlers Tia-Adana Belle and Shawn Rowe are featured in the June 19 issue of Sports Illustrated magazine. They are in the Faces In The Crowd section on page 28. Faces In The Crowd honors the best up-and-coming amateur athletes from around the country.
Baseball
ECU: Senior pitcher Evan Kruczynski has been named a 2017 Senior CLASS Award First-Team All-American in college baseball. It’s Kruczynski’s third career All-America accolade after his junior season when he earned third-team honors by D1 Baseball and honorable mention accolades from Perfect Game.
Elon: The team placed three players on the 2017 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association all-State University Division Baseball Team, the organization said Friday. Sophomore infielder Ryne Ogren garnered first-team honors, while senior outfielder Kyle Jackson and freshman pitcher Kyle Brnovich collected second-team accolades.
Mount Olive: The team placed five student-athletes on the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association’s 2017 College Division All-State Baseball Teams. The Trojans garnered six total all-state honors as senior Zack Mozingo earned two honors, while fellow seniors Austin Hutchison, Ricky Surum, Bruce Zimmermann and junior Drew Ellis also appeared on the all-state teams.
Softball
Mount Olive: Junior Kayla Allen was named second-team all-state by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association. The Benson native led the Trojans in average, hits and doubles in 42 games as UMO went 25-29 on the season.
Men’s Tennis
N.C. State: Charlotte 49ers head coach Jeremy Feldman has announced the hiring of Robbie Mudge as assistant coach. Mudge was a three-time All-ACC selection at N.C. State.
Women’s Basketball
Campbell: Coach Ronny Fisher has announced the signing of Lauren McNamara-Clement to a letter of commitment and financial aid agreement to join the Camels for the 2017-18 campaign. McNamara-Clement is a 6-2 forward from Raleigh. A four-year letter-winner and team captain at Leesville Road High School, she was a 2016 All-Cap-8 Conference selection and was named to the league’s all-tournament team.
Wake Forest: Junior Elisa Penna was named to the Italian senior national team for the first time in her career as Italy opened play at EuroBasket Women 2017 on Friday. Placed in Group B, Italy opened play against Belarus with an 80-60 victory in which Penna played 10 minutes and finished with three points, three rebounds and one assist.
Duke: Coming off a 28-win season a year ago, season tickets for the 2017-18 Duke women’s basketball campaign are on sale now. The Blue Devils return All-America Lexie Brown along with All-ACC selection Rebecca Greenwell and other letterwinners Leaonna Odom, Kyra Lambert, Erin Mathias and Faith Suggs. Duke will also welcome one of the top recruiting classes in the nation.
Field Hockey
Duke: Incoming freshman Lexi Davidson, rising sophomores Margaux Paolino, Haley Schleicher and Jillian Wolgemuth and rising junior Morgan Bitting have been selected to take part in USA Field Hockey’s U21 Junior and Development Squad National Camps, the organization said Friday after the end of the 2017 Young Women’s National Championship.
Miscellaneous
St. Augustine’s: The university capped another successful athletic season by placing first among CIAA schools in the final 2016-17 Learfield Directors’ Cup Division II conference standings announced by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in June. The Learfield Cup standings recognize the top athletic programs in the nation based on their results in the NCAA championships in 14 sports (seven men and seven women).
