Duke football facility honored for safety

Duke’s Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium will be honored with a 2017 Facility of Merit Award as part of the National Sports Safety and Security Conference and Exhibition on July 11-13 in Orlando, Fla.

Home to Duke’s football program, Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium is one of three NCAA gridiron facilities to receive the honor for leadership in addressing safety and security issues, joined by Vaught Hemingway Stadium (Ole Miss) and Ryan Field (Northwestern). Ten total facilities were recognized including professional venues Bridgestone Arena (NHL’s Nashville Predators), Progressive Field (MLB’s Cleveland Indians) and Levi’s Stadium (NFL’s San Francisco 49ers).

St. Augustine’s: Omar Johnson, Shawn Rowe and Shakera Hall garnered Academic All-America Division II track and field honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America. The academic award highlights student-athletes with a 3.30 or higher cumulative grade-point average who are key contributors on their respective teams. The student-athletes were nominated and selected by members of CoSIDA.

Duke: Rising sophomores Margaux Paolino and Jillian Wolgemuth have been named to the 2017 U.S. U21 women’s national team, as announced by USA Field Hockey. In addition, rising sophomore Haley Schleicher was one of five athletes who will be offered a trial spot on the U.S. U21 team following the 2017 collegiate season.

Elon: Sophomore Jacob Bicknell competed for his home country of Jamaica in the Davis Cup Americas Group III competition from June 12-17 in Montevideo, Uruguay. It marked the first time in his career he played for his country. In the event, he posted an overall record of 4-4 in both singles and doubles, going 2-2 in singles and 2-2 in doubles.

Wake Forest: Coach Tony Bresky announced Thursday the addition of Morgan Dill, Ryan Mueller and Yuval Solomon to the roster for the upcoming season.

The trio of Demon Deacons will join a program that reached new heights in 2017, as the Deacs earned the program's first-ever ACC regular-season title, first-ever No. 1 national ranking and the first-ever No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship en route to the quarterfinals, the deepest run in program history.
