Swimmers wrap up action at Phillips 66 Nationals
Blue Devil swimmers closed out action at the USA Swimming Phillips 66 National Championships over the weekend, with Duke alumna Ashley Twichell earning a third-place finish Saturday in the 1,500-meter freestyle.
Twichell, a 2011 Duke graduate, turned in the third-fastest mark in a field of nearly 40 swimmers, stopping the clock at 16:10.63. She previously qualified for this summer’s FINA World Championships in the 5K and 10K open water events with a strong showing at the Open Water National Championships.
Also competing in Saturday’s distance events at IU Natatorium was rising Blue Devil sophomore Roger Kriegl, who went 8:30.97 in the 800 freestyle.
Saturday’s preliminary heats saw rising sophomore Alyssa Marsh clock 26.14 and rising junior Maddie Hess 26.67 in the 50 freestyle. On Friday, both Blue Devils took to the water in the 100 backstroke, with Hess turning in a mark of 1:02.80 and Marsh 1:04.18 in preliminaries.
Rising junior Max St. George also competed in the 100 backstroke preliminaries on the men’s side, recording a time of 56.50 for 30th overall. Incoming freshman Adam Zimmer rounded out the Duke contingent with a mark of 1:04.09 in the 100 breaststroke trials.
Earlier in the week, Marsh raced to a fourth-place finish in the 50 butterfly finals, and St. George advanced to finals in the 50 backstroke, placing 14th overall.
The 2017 FINA World Championships open July 14 in Budapest, Hungary, with the women’s open-water 10K slated for Sunday, July 16, and the women’s open-water 5K for Wednesday, July 19.

Duke: Three members of the Blue Devils’ incoming freshman class competed in the 12th annual Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Game Saturday, with Charlotte North taking home MVP honors after leading the South team to a 16-15 overtime victory at Towson’s Johnny Unitas Stadium.
