Barton’s Mike Mchan is volleyball athlete of week
Barton College senior Mike McMahon has been honored as the Conference Carolinas Men’s Volleyball Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
McMahon set an NCAA Division I-II record for career digs in the 25-point rally scoring era during a tri-match on Saturday. The Dana Point, Calif., resident now has 1,028 digs for his career, surpassing the previous record of 1,013 held by Javier Caceres of Pacific.
He averaged 3.92 digs per set for the week, raising his season average to 3.13, third-best in the country. His averages might have been even higher, but he played setter during the tri-match so that a fellow senior could start at libero in his final home appearance. McMahon produced 67 assists in the two matches, including 44 against Coker.
Track and field
Barton: Sophomore Semaj Street has been named Conference Carolinas Men’s Outdoor Track Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league announced.
Street was honored after winning the 200-meter dash at High Point’s VertKlasse Meeting and finishing second in the 100-meter dash with an NCAA provisional time.
Saint Augustine’s: Sparked by an outstanding performance at the Florida Relays this past weekend, two-time defending champion Saint Augustine’s has moved to the top spot in the NCAA Division II Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Rankings. The women’s team is ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Rankings.
Elon: Freshman Emily Dixon was selected as the CAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesdayafter the Bath, United Kingdom, native captured the heptathlon title at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational.
Baseball
NCCU: UNC Wilmington scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning for a 3-2 come-from-behind win over NCCU.
Basketball
Saint Augustine’s: Guard Raheem Jolliffe was named to the College Division All-State Men’s Basketball Second Team by the N.C. Collegiate Sports Information Association.
Softball
NCCU: A two-run homer by sophomore Brianna Hampton accounted for both of N.C. Central runs in a 10-0 and 4-2 MEAC doubleheader home loss to Bethune-Cookman.
NCCU (14-19, 0-5 MEAC) and B-CU (12-24, 5-0) will conclude the three-game league series with a Noon finale on Wednesday.
Women’s tennis
Elon: The team beat visiting Davidson 6-1 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. Tthe Phoenix moved to 13-6, and the Wildcats dropped to 10-8.
Men’s Golf
N.C. State: Dropping ten strokes from its prior best score of the tournament, the NC State men’s golf team shot an impressive 283 (-5) on Tuesday at the 2015 Gary Koch Invitational to improve from eighth place to a team finish of fifth.
