UNC women, Duke men advance to ACC lacrosse finals

Top-seeded North Carolina earned a spot in the women’s lacrosse championship finals on Friday, defeating fifth-seeded Notre Dame 18-4 in a record-setting semifinal that offered a sharp contrast to the regular-season meeting between the teams.

North Carolina (15-2) advanced to Sunday’s 1 p.m. title game and will face Syracuse (13-6). UNC will be seeking its second ACC championship and its first since 2002.

Duke: The seventh-ranked Orange scored its second “upset” victory of this year’s tournament, turning back second-seeded and third-ranked Duke 14-10 in Friday’s other semifinal.

Men’s Lacrosse

Duke: Fourth-seeded Duke jumped out to a big lead and withstood a late comeback attempt to defeat top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Notre Dame, 13-8, Friday night in the semifinals of the ACC championship in Philadelphia.

UNC: No. 2 North Carolina fell to No. 4 Syracuse 9-8 in the ACC Tournament . Kevin Rice scored the game-winner for the Orange with 1:48 to play, propelling the Orange into the ACC championship game Sunday against Duke at 1 p.m.

Baseball

UNC: Zac Gallen allowed just three hits in his second complete game in as many home starts as No. 18 North Carolina topped visiting Boston College 1-0. Logan Warmoth’s bases-loaded walk against BC starter Mike King in the second inning produced the lone run of the game.

Duke: A solid pitching performance from Andrew Istler and a pair of key two-out extra base hits helped host Duke top Virginia Tech 6-3.

Istler (4-3) turned in his seventh quality start of the season, allowing one run over seven innings. After a Brendon Hayden solo home run in the second, Istler retired 13-straight batters to quiet the Hokie offense.

N.C. State: The host Wolfpack (21-18, 9-12 ACC) fell 8-3 to Virginia (27-15, 10-12 ACC) in the first of a three-game series. Virginia ) broke a scoreless tie with a one run in the fifth, before a five-run sixth opened a 6-0 lead.

Men’s Tennis

ACC: The semifinal field for the ACC championship in Cary is set, as Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest advance.

Georgia Tech moved onto the semifinals by upsetting No. 2 Virginia Tech 4-3.

North Carolina beat No. 5 Duke 4-3. North Carolina will play No. 1 Virginia at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Wake Forest cruised to a 4-0 win over No. 11 Clemson to move into the semifinals to face No. 10 Georgia Tech at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Women’s Tennis

ACC: The semifinal field for the ACC championship in Cary is set, as Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Virginia advance.

Georgia Tech upset No. 3 Duke 4-3. Georgia Tech will face FSU tomorrow at 2 p.m.

No. 1-ranked North Carolina breezed to a 4-0 victory over No. 9 Virginia Tech. North Carolina will play No. 4 Virginia at 2 p.m. with the match being broadcast live on ESPN3.
