UNC baseball beats Boston College

J.B. Bukauskas (4-1) worked seven scoreless innings as No. 18 North Carolina beat visiting Boston College 6-1 Saturday at a rainy Boshamer Stadium. Landon Lassiter had two doubles, and all nine starters reached base for the Tar Heels, who will go for their first conference sweep of the year Sunday at noon.

Carolina (28-15, 12-10 ACC) left five runners on in the first three innings before breaking through in the fourth. Logan Warmoth singled and moved to second on a groundout before Zack Gahagan’s RBI hit to center put the Tar Heels in front.

UNC padded the lead on run-scoring singles by Joe Dudek and Skye Bolt before Lassiter’s second double of the day made it 4-0 in the sixth.

ECU: Reid Love (4-3) fanned a career-high nine batters, while Garrett Brooks, Bryce Harman and Travis Watkins each drove in a run helping the host Pirates to a 3-2 series clinching win over No. 24 UCF.

The win extended the Pirates (28-16, 8-6 AAC) win streak to five games, while the set back pushed the Knights (26-18, 5-9 AAC) loosing streak to four.

St. Augustine’s: Standout pitchers Brian Rivera and Jeremy Sandifer each threw one-hit shutouts as visiting Saint Augustine’s blanked Lincoln (Pa.) 8-0 and 5-0 in a CIAA baseball doubleheader.

Rivera recorded eight strikeouts in seven innings in Game 1, and Sandifer amassed 12 strikeouts in six innings in Game 2. Sean Brassington (Cardinal Gibbons) pitched the final inning in the second game and earned one strikeout. Sandifer leads the CIAA with 75 strikeouts and Rivera is second with 66.

Track and Field

Duke: Duke closed out the third and final day of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia with another strong showing. For the second straight day, the women’s 800m relay team set a new Duke record in the event, while the men’s 3200m team recorded the third-fastest time in school history.

Golf

UNC: The North Carolina men’s golf team had a strong second round in wet conditions in the ACC championship in New London, firing a 6-under-par 282 to sit in sixth at 1-under 575. For the second day in a row, Henry Do went low for the Tar Heels, carding a 3-under 69 to move to 5-under 139 in a tie for 6th.

Duke: Freshman Adam Wood posted his second straight round of 72 and is tied for 18th through two rounds at the ACC championship. Duke is 10th overall.

Tennis

UNC: The No. 1 seed North Carolina team fell in the ACC semifinals to the 4th-seeded Virginia Cavaliers, 4-1, suffering its first loss of the season. The team moves to 27-1.

This is only the second time this season that Carolina has dropped the doubles point, the first time being against Duke in the final match of the regular season.
