N.C. State Wolfpack falls to FSU in ACC softball tournament

Despite outhitting the ninth-ranked Florida State, N.C. State suffered an 11-4 loss on Friday in the semifinals of the ACC Championship held at Tech Softball Park. FSU scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away late in the contest.

N.C. State will now await the NCAA Softball Selection Show on Sunday at 10 p.m. on ESPNU to hear of its postseason fate. The Pack is currently listed at No. 31 in the latest RPI and is seeking its third consecutive NCAA bid, which would mark a first for the program.

UNC: The No. 2 seeded Tar Heels fell 4-0 to Pitt (35-19), which advances to face top-seeded and defending champion Florida State (44-12) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

UNC (36-14) figures to be in good shape for an NCAA tournament at-large selection.

St. Aug’s: CIAA champion Saint Augustine’s lost 11-0 to California (Pa.) in an NCAA Division II Atlantic 1 Regional first-round game.

The eighth-seed Lady Falcons (22-14) will face the University of Charleston (W.Va.)-Gannon University loser in an elimination bracket game on at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Baseball

UNC: A series opener between No. 20 North Carolina and Notre Dame washas been postponed. The teams will play a doubleheader starting 2 p.m. Saturday.

Men’s Tennis

UNC: The No. 13 team defeated visiting CAA champion William & Mary 4-0 in an NCAA Tournament first-round match.

The Tar Heels will host 20th-ranked Mississippi State at 3 p.m. Saturday.

N.C. State: The No. 37 tennis team lost 4-3 to No. 30 Tulsa in Fort Worth, Texas.

Basketball

UNC: Former point guard Bobby Frasor is returning home to Chicago to become head coach at Brother Rice High School where he was a McDonald’s All-American and was named the Chicago Catholic League Player of the Year.

Frasor had been director of basketball operations at UAB under UNC alum Jerod Haase.

Women’s Golf

Duke: The No. 6 ranked team held the team and individual lead heading into the final round of the South Bend Regional at Notre Dame. Junior Celine Boutier continued to hold the top slot as she carded an even-par, 72, in the second round and led with a five-under 139
