Gurbani Singh wins Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour event in India
Duke University rising sophomore Gurbani Singh played a flawless final round of three-under-par, 69, at the Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour event played at the Royal Springs Golf Course in India to become the first amateur to win on the tour this year.
After turning in a two-over-par, 74, in the second round, Singh carded birdies on No. 5, No. 12 and No. 18 on her way to a bogey-free final round of 69 as she finished with a 54-hole ledger of 211. She won by five strokes over Vani Kapoor, Gursimar Badwal and Amandeep Drall (216).
The 2015 Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour comprises a total of 19 legs spanning across key locations in India.
A native of New Delhi, India, Singh turned in a 74.50 stroke average with two top 10 finishes and three top 20 placements as a rookie at Duke during the 2014-15 season. She saved her best golf for the postseason as Singh finished sixth overall in the ACC Championship and tied 14th at the NCAA Championship.
Duke: Rising sophomore Leona Maguire closed day one of action at the Vagliano Trophy in Ireland with a 2-0 record as Europe holds a 6-1/2 to 5-1/2 lead after Friday’s action at the Malone Golf Club.
Men’s Basketball
Wake Forest: Rising sophomore Konstantinos Mitoglou will be competing for Greece in the U-19 FIBA World Championships, June 27-July 5, in Heraklion, Greece.
Last season, Mitoglou finished his first year with the Demon Deacons averaging 9.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He finished second on the team with 19 blocked shots during his freshman campaign. He also earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors February 16, 2015 after the Thessaloniki, Greece, native averaged 19.5 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 63 percent (12-for-19) from 3-point range in Wake Forest's two games that week.
Men’s Tennis
Duke: Rising sophomore Nicolas Alvarez has been selected to participate in the inaugural Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Masters, the first national collegiate championship of the 2015-16 season.
As a freshman in 2014-15, Alvarez turned in one of the best rookie campaigns in program history and earned All-America honors. He became Duke’s 21st All-American, and the first since Henrique Cunha in 2012. Alvarez ended the year ranked No. 11 in the final Oracle/ITA poll, the highest for a Blue Devil since Cunha was fifth in 2013.
Alvarez was also named the ITA Carolina Region Player to Watch at the end of the season and earned first team All-ACC honors after going 31-11 overall with all 11 losses coming against nationally ranked opponents. The 31 wins are tied for the eighth most by a freshman in program history. He also received bids to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.
