Rachel Mumma, Lotta Nevalainen to Compete at World University Games

Rachel Mumma and Lotta Nevalainen of the N.C. State women’s swimming and diving team are set to compete at the World University Games, held in Gwangju City, South Korea, on July 3-14.

Mumma’s competition will begin Friday as she will represent the United States in the one meter dive.

In December 2014, she earned a selection spot at the USA Diving Winter National Championships. In May, she earned her official spot on the team, marking the first diver in Wolfpack history to compete at the World University Games.

Nevalainen will represent Finland at the competition. She is slated to swim in the 50 and 100m backstroke, as well as the 50 and 100m freestyle events.

The Imatra, Finland, native will begin competition Sunday as she swims the 100m free, followed by the 100m back on Monday, the 50m back on Wednesday and the 50m free on Thursday.

Softball

ECU: Jessica Hirschbul, a former standout first baseman at Hofstra, has been named assistant coach according to an announcement by coach Courtney Oliver on Thursday.

Hirschbuhl also owns three years of softball coaching experience after coaching the 16u Softball Team in Farmingdale, N.Y., from 2010 – 2013. She served as the head coach and pitching coach while instructing athletes on fundamental and advanced techniques. At the helm, Hirschbuhl created sport-specific training programs for athletes to improve strength, fitness and athletic performance.

Football

NCCU: Thirteen-year coach Carl Funderburk has joined the football staff as tight ends coach.

A native of Durham, Funderburk’s last coaching stop was with the Fayetteville Force of the Southern Indoor Football League as offensive line and defensive line coach during the 2011 season.
