Duke kicker Martin named to Groza watch list
Duke senior kicker Ross Martin was named to the preseason watch list for the Lou Groza Award, as announced Thursday by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
Martin finished as a semifinalist for the award given to the nation’s top kicker in 2012 and 2014.
Martin enters his final season as the Blue Devils’ career points leader with 310, the fifth most among active Football Bowl Subdivision kickers. He has converted a school record 110 consecutive PATs. In 40 career games, he has made 52-of-63 field goals and all but one of his 155 career extra points.
Punter Monday recognized: Senior punter Will Monday was named to the preseason watch list for the Ray Guy Award, presented by the Augusta Sports Council, for the third straight season. The award honors the nation’s top collegiate punter. Monday has been an All-ACC honoree for three straight seasons.
Women’s Golf
WGCA Scholars: The following golfers were among the 758 named Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholars for maintaining a GPA of at least 3.5:
Duke – Gurbani Singh, Leona Maguire, Lisa Maguire; East Carolina – Katie Kirk, Lisa Pettersson, Nico Engstroem Skaug; N.C. State – Cecily Overbey; North Carolina – Alexandra Harkins, Maia Schechter.
North Carolina: Coach Jan Mann has announced that assistant Leah Buchmann will become the program’s new associate head coach. Buchmann has been with the Tar Heels for three years and will begin her fourth in the fall.
Field Hockey
Duke: Goalkeeper Lauren Blazing and former defensive standout Stefanie Fee will represent the United States at the Pan American Games, which kick off this week in Toronto. Pool play begin Monday.
Team USA is in Pool B along with Chile, Cube and Uruguay. Argentina, Canada, the Dominican Republic and Mexico make up the other pool. The winning country gets an automatic bid to the 2016 Olympics.
Swimming and Diving
Duke: Sophomore Isabella Paez will represent Venezuela in the 200-meter butterfly and 100 butterfly at the Pan American Games, which kick off with Friday’s opening ceremony in Toronto. Swimming events start Tuesday.
N.C. State: Coach Braden Holloway released the team’s schedule for the 2015-16 schedule. It features three meets inside Casey Natatorium, three match ups against conference foes, two trips to the west coast and two trips along the southeast coast.
The Wolfpack will host the All-N.C. Invite on Oct. 2-3 in Greensboro to open its season. It will visit Chapel Hill and North Carolina for its final regular season meet on Jan. 30.
Volleyball
East Carolina: Coach Julie Torbett announced the team’s schedule, highlighted by 13 home matches including the East Carolina Invitational, which is also the Pirates’ home opener, as well as a 20-match conference slate.
The Pirates open the season on the road at Savannah State (Aug. 30), before heading to Durham to take on N.C. Central (Sept. 1). ECU’s first tournament of the year will be held in Davidson against Presbyterian, Hampton and the host Wildcats.
