NC State’s Matt Dayes, Duke’s Shaquille Powell named to Doak Walker Award watch list
N.C. State’s Matt Dayes and Duke’s Shaquille Powell were named to the Doak Walker Award watch list Thursday.
The award is given annually to the nation’s top college running back.
Dayes, a junior, led the Wolfpack last season with 1,278 all-purpose yards, including 573 rushing, and 13 touchdowns. He was one of just three players nationally with more than 300 yards rushing, receiving and returning.
Powell, a senior, rushed 134 times for 618 yards and two touchdowns last season while catching 18 passes for 154 yards and one TD.
The Doak Walker Award, now in its 26th year, is named for SMU’s three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
